Default Do I need my shift Solenoid

My solenoid is playing up; cant find a used one, new is $1000.
Do I need it or can I just remove it?
Will it cause something else to fail if I just remove it?

Thanks in advance

Lyncom, a shift solenoid is a vital part. WIthout it, the transmission can not shift into that gear. The solenoid is what ports the oil to a piston that pushes the gearing into place. So, no solenoid, no working tranny. Sorry, but that is the short of the story.

Lyncom, are you talking about the solenoid in the J-Gate that clicks when you take your foot off the brakes, or as Thermo suggests, a solenoid in the transmission?

Regards

Rob

Slocs, you do bring up a good point. Never gave the J-Gate solenoid a thought. That solenoid technically can be removed, but at the same time, it is there for a reason and I would hate to see a car fall into auto-pilot on a hill. Tends to not end good.

Thanks Rob and Thermo (J-Gate), Rob hit it on the head; Jag quoted me $994 new, Jagdaim quoted me $100 for a second hand part.

Car was operating just fine and had a few taps from the shifter here and there, better be safe than sorry!

Sounds like Jaguar are pricing a complete J Gate - individual parts not offered!- whereas Jagdaim have a standalone solenoid.
