drive shaft
so I got a whining noise when i travel 25mph and up, the faster I go, the higher pitch the noise is. (noise only during mobile), I step on the clutch and free my gear and the noise still there, so I know very big possibility nothing to do with the engine. I got my x-type on may 10, so at the end of fall when temperature started to drop to like 10c or lower, it whines, Its winter now and I got that noise everyday. Well the noise usually goes away after 10-15mins of driving.
As I read across our forum, I learnt that it could be the drive shaft, it can be solved by greasing the center bearing. I gave that a shot but the noise did not go away. I bring to a local mechanic and he did have a look at my car, like most of you guys, he said that it's not going to kill the car, its just gonna irritate me. He also suggest that it could be the u-joint. So now that I'm looking into getting rid of the noise, I look up for the driveshaft at ebay, I'm kind of confuse, I saw somebody written over here saying the part cost $800, I saw the part at gaudinjagparts and its like around $450, then I went on ebay, and saw they have "front/rear/left/right drive shaft, I'm kind of confuse now, don't our cars just have one drive shaft?

dude, it is ALL WHEEL DRIVE .. lol, there has to be a shaft to drive each wheel. plus more.
depending on the terminology, axleshaft, drive shaft, propeller shaft, stub hsaft, link shaft, etc, you can include many shafts. and people interchange the names
the one in question is the main front/rear drive shaft or propeller shaft. It is the only one in two pieces and has a centre support bearing (which is making the noise).
Keep in mind that your car does not have any U-Joints. there are joints at the each end of this drive shaft and they are CV type joints. In all there are 8 CV joints on the X-Type.
I strongly suggest that you get the car up on a lift and take a look, so you know what you are dealing with, if you are going to get involved in the repair.
