Default Duplicate Key Question

Today I went and had a duplicate key made for my 99 xk8 and when they were finished the tech told me that the barrel of my key ignition had been changed at some point in its life. Therefore, the key cutting code from the original car's key and radio codes would not work, but they cut it from the key I had. They were busy and I didn't ask him why they would change the barrel of the key ignition. Anyone have an answer? Buy the way, the Key cost $70.00 and the labor was 67.50. This was at Autobahn in Fort Worth, Texas. This does not make sense to me. That would mean all of the locks on the car had been changed. Why would the previous owners do that? Baffles me? Any help?

Thanks

The only reason that I could think of, is maybe they lost their keys (or they were stolen) and they were worried that someone might steal their car.
