Default Engine Belt

02 x type 2.5 How many belts does this car have? Is the motor chain driven? When I crank my car in the mornings and its cold there is a bit of a squealing sound for a minute or two and then it goes away. When I went for a oil change I asked my mechanic and he said my belts need to be replaced. He showed me the belt and said it has small cracks in it and it has been stretched. Does anyone have any experience changing this belt? how difficult is it? Any diagrams or pics? Also where is the cheapest place to buy a belt? I am located in Canada but dont mind buying online or taking a trip to the US.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

I am not familiar with X Types but all the X Types as rest of other luxury car manufacturers come with the timing chain

X-Type has a timming chain, but you have two belts: One in the passenger side and one in the driver side (close to the battery box).
If they squeal you must replace them.

canada as well

If my motor is chain driven, and I have a belt on both sides of my motor, what does the drivers side belt do? what does the passenger side belt do? what are these belts called? How much do they go for?

Thumbs up

Left side (drivers side or rear of engine) belt drives the water pump. Right side (passenger side or front of engine) drives the alternator, power steering pump, A/C. They are both called accessory drive belts but the water pump belt is smaller and the other is a serpentine belt. I found the serpentine belt at several general auto parts stores for between $16 & $45 US. The water pump belt I had to look at the more specialized online parts places and found it at one place that I've used before Autohause Arizona. They have the water pump belt for $24 US and they also have the serpentine belt for $47 US. I bought my rear brake pads from them for what I considered a good price and their shipping was quick and free. I think their free shipping is for orders over $25 US. I don't know about shipping to Canada though.

Hope the infor helps.

*****P.S. I found the belt tensioner at one general parts store for $80 US. In case that's where the squeal is coming from.******

I bought my serpentine belt from CarQuest for $32.49 CAN.
There is still a slight squeal after first start on the coldest day - probably the high alternator load, but much better than before.
It is quite ugly to change. I found I had to do most of the work by feel.
Good luck.

if you have a high mileage Jag, check the belt tensioner. Usually when you start hearing squealing it's my girlfriend...i mean, it's the tensioner going....it's not providing enough tension on the accessories drives....belt tensioner is usually good for about 80K miles

the serpentine belt is easy if you remove the RF wheel and inner fender liner... do it all from inside the wheel well.

Thanks for the replies guys. Next time I go for an oil change I will have this looked at in detail. Also how do you know a tensioner is gone? how hard is it to replace?
