Default Engine misfiring?

Afternoon all,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction with what seems like the engine missing or not firing on all cylinders.
Last night my wife was driving home and when she tried to pull out of a junction the car seemed to stall. It restarted ok but any pressure on the accelerator made the car sound like it wasn't firing on all cylinders. The battery was also dead by the time I got there. I drove out to meet her and got the car started with jump leads no problem but even just revving the engine produced similar results. I managed to get the car moving but again the car wanted to stall when pulling away. Once I got to around 3000rpm it seemed ok but below this it would do the "missing" type feel and had to keep the revs over 2000 to stop stalling while pulling away.

I went out to try the car this morning and it fired up but died instantly and after a few tries it looked like the battery was dead.

Now I'm guessing it's a battery issue but as I'm kinda rubbish with cars other than wheel changes etc, my question is would a dud battery cause the issues above? There were no lights on the dash to indicate any other issues

Apologies if this is rambling on but I'm trying to be clear as possible about the issue.

Thanks

Apologies,

It's a 2007 2.2d xtype. I thought I'd added that in the signature bit but obviously not
