Having troubles with our family car. It's a 2004 X-Type 3.0 with around 130,000km on it. Recently it has had a persistent habit of overheating. First happened when I was driving on the highway, I got to around 90kph and then engine temperature light came on as well as the needle going right into the red. Took it to a shop where they replaced all of the coolant hoses because they said there were all constricted. Problem solved? No.

Now it seems that if i go above 60kph or 2,000rpm for any period of time the engine immediately overheats. Even going up a slight at hill at more than 60 makes the car go into the red. When I park it at home the two fans up front blow for about 20 minutes before they finally turn off. I don't drive very far each day, around 16km in the city, so i'm not exactly asking a lot of it. Driving at 50 all the time is becoming rather impractical to say the least (highway driving is out of the question).

So what is the problem? Thermostat? Fans? Engine (please no)? This seems to be a problem other people have had with their X-types so any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

 

Yes - Thermostat.

The shop that replaced the hoses was quite remiss in not changing out the thermostat.

Easy fix.
