Default Extended Warranty options for 2002

Hello,

First off I want to thank everyone here for contributing to make this such a useful sight. I've learned countless things about my x-type.

I just purchased a 2002 2.5 auto from a family member. The car has 22,000 miles on it and was very well cared for. Needless to say it spent some time in the shop over the past few years before I bought it but not for anything major, ie. transfer case, transmission, throttle body, etc. are all original.

I've been looking into purchasing an extended warranty just in case the transfer case or trans were to fail. Most other items I could fix myself but looking at the 2k plus cost for a transfer case or transmission is scaring me a bit. Reading through the site it seems as if it's not "if" they fail, but "when". Any advice or opinions are welcome. If anyone knows of a good warranty place or one to stay away from that would be great. I read a bit about the "select edition" from jaguar but since the factory warranty has run out I would imagine I cannot apply for that?

Thank you in advance for your help.

You cannot get Select...you are correct.

PM me the last six of your VIN. I need to look at something.

Thanks for the fast reply FJT, I just sent you the PM. I actually found a 'powertrain only' warranty for $900. This covers the trans, transfer case, and related parts. The driveshaft bearing just started to make noise this past winter so I'm sure that's on its way out. At $800 just to replace that the warranty would almost pay for itself.

I do realize that these companies are out there to make money and that most people who buy them are better off without. It just seems like a nice piece of mind with these high dollar repair cars.

I'll check with the dealership on Monday and see what they offer. I forgot to mention that the car was only driven an average of 3,000 miles a year for its first 7 years and now it's being driven every day by me. I'm nervous because issues that might have appeared while under warranty if the card had been driven more will now start to appear out of warranty. Hopefully the dealer will have something they recommend.

So I have a couple of quotes in hand and was wondering what you thought. I'm on the border whether I should just go it without the warranty or spend the money now. The car is a 2002 which a lot of people on the forum say to stay away from. It only has 22,000 miles so my concern is that it wasn't driven enough during its original warranty period to shake loose any problems.

The 2 quotes I received from a Jag dealer were $5,800 for 3 years 36k additional miles. There is also a $100 deductable.

I also checked out warranty direct. They seem to be highly regarded in all reviews and with the better business bureau. Their top warranty is $3,800 with no deductable.

Both warranties cover pretty much everything from brake calipers to the transfer case to window switches. Do you guys think that it's worth the gamble or is the $3,800 worth it for a little piece of mind over the next 3 years?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I'd go with the $3800.00 deal..No deductable..One major problem like the tranny or engine can eat that up in no time..

I know. Even close to 4k is insane. I think I might pass on them both. I'm pretty adimant about preventative maintenance so it's probably not worth it for someone like me. I'm sure the car will have problems, but hopefully I can handle the majority of them myself.

That is half what it costs for a Bentley warranty.....lol

Only you can make the choice. 2002 is notorious for trans problem. That right there will be about 6 or 7k. Engine failure would be another $15k. Gamble yes.....but hopefully you will be ok and not need the warranty.

Pretty sure my father in law has warranty direct on his dodge ram van and the most they'll pay out is 30 an hour to mechanic to fix his van. Jag charges much more than 30 an hour for labor and they have a max they'll pay for a part. Only small time shops would want to deal with these warranties when they aren't going to make enough money to cover the overhead alone...just my .02 cents...That seems kind of high though either way...

FJT, just when I talk myself out of ityou bring up the 5k repair ;-). Is the failure rate really that high on the 02's? Right now the car has 22k on it and I put around 6k or so per year on it. Are the chances of the trans failing before 60k that high? You input is much appreciated.

aquill, you make a good point. There are a lot of warranties out the for $1,700 that look to be the same on the outside. When you read the contract though they restrict labor rates or will only cover claims up to $4,000. The $3,800 warranty does not contain any such restrictions. I've done a fair amount of research on them and warrantydirect.com looks to be the most reputable place out there. They just pay the dealer/shop directly on the phone with their corporate credit card.

I apologize my father in-law has continental warranty not warranty direct...He said today they've already paid more than what the warranty costs...if you can afford the warranty do it, chances are you won't regret it. Once you have it you feel better because you feel secure but the second you don't have that warranty things will go wrong and you'll be ticked you didn't get it...

That might be enough to talk me into buying it. I was on the fence because this caris almost brand new. 22k miles is nothing but I guess with it being the first model year and the high cost of repairs on this thing the warranty is worth it. Thanks for the help everyone.

Well you need to also figure that all the problems were fixed a short period down the road. With only 22k miles you would probably find the problems soon as the car isn't driven much. Good example would be police cars, they sit and idle so much that they have problems even though they aren't driven as much. Mileage isn't always a bad thing! Another example would be an old folks car that either doesn't get driven much or even when driven never gets used anywhere near where it should be. Eventually you'll notice smoke that blows out of the tailpipes in crown vics whether it be a police vehicle sold to public or an old persons crown vic.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
i just went to the Warranty Direct website and followed their instructions for Instant Quote. After you give them all your personal info, the last screen says we'll have a representative contact you! they lie and mislead you to think you'll get an instant price quote, then think I'll trust them to pay my warranty claims?!LIARS ARE LIARS - period !NO WAY ..

I went with Auto Service Warranty. Best darned thing I ever did. I found them on google.

Just this week I went in for an oil change and found out I needed $3800.00 worth of work!

Front right brake boost was gone, no ABS or DSC... $1200
Brake electronic control module was shorted out by the faulty brake boost... $1400
Oil pan gasket was leaking... $600

My out of pocket cost for all of the above was $435.

I bought the bumper to bumper warranty for $1585 (3 year - 75k mile)

The warranty has already paid @ $5000 in just over a year!

Also, the repair shop calls them directly, they approve of the repair and they pay with a credit card right over the phone, so you don't have to deal with forms or faxes or reimbursments.

I highly reccomend this warranty company... and when you call you get a real, live human being!
Sounds promising. I'll give them a call tomorrow. Any new updates on your experience with them?

Eeeeewww... they ALL look like scams from the reviews. I think I'll just stick my $3,800 or $5,400 under my mattress in case something happens.
