Help, this is my view and take it for what it is worth. Spend the money on getting a used ECU and have a mechanic program it for you. This is going to be the cheapest way out for the most part. Any shop that advertises that they can repair jaguar cars should have the SDD software to reprogram the ECU. Of note, you will need to take them every key you have for the car. The keys that you do not bring them, will not work with the car after they do the programming. Granted, if you only have 1 key, now would be the time to get a second. Look around here, there are many horror stories about people only having a single key and then bam, something happens to that key and they are SOL. Look around and see what you find. Let the other members pain be your guide.
NOw, if you think you can do this yourself, you are in for a lot of learning. I will start with that. Not saying that you can't do it, but don't think this is a 10 minute programming your first time. the X-Type is going to also need a power supply to be connected to the car capable of 20 amps at 13.5 VDC also. So, factor that into your costs here. When you start programming, the car has to be off, but up at 13.5 VDC and you need the 20 amp ability as the computer can suck up that much power while programming. So, a normal battery charger is not going to do it for you. The benefit though is you are going ot have the best code reader out there and it will tell you more about the car than you car to admit to. But, at the same time, it also gives you the ability to "tweak things" and you can just as easily brick the various computers of the car. So, you start playing, you are playing with fire.
As for SDD kits out there, if you have a spare laptop, then you can get off fairly cheap, but this also comes at a cost of having to install stuff yourself and as I have found out, SDD is not the most friendly of apps to try and get installed. So, here is a quick list of stuff that I found that is going to cover a large price range. For the price, you get convenience and ready to go equipment. But, it comes at a cost.

ONe other thing that you will want to be aware of. Some of these require connection to a website called "Topix". This is a Jaguar specific website that keeps a lot of the latest and greatest programming stuff for the various modules of your car. The SDD should have a basic setup, but if you want the latest and greatest, you will need to get a subscription to Topix. It is not necessarily the cheapest subscription to get, but you can get say a 1 day only subscription for like $30 as I recall. Some versions of SDD may require you to log into Topix before the SDD will work. So, this is not just a simple "buy this one and I am good forever". There are significant differences between what I have shown you and what you save initially, may cost you later. The $100 kit I show may be what you need to get the car up and running right now and that may be all that you care about. But, having this software is nice, but I found out the hard way that the cheap version of the software is not always the best answer. Mine worked great for about 2 months and then one day it said it wasn't going to play without a subscription.
If you are looking to recover the current ECU, Plan on spending about $50 to get new electronic components. What is melted is a MOSFET (high power transistor). But, those run about $7 a piece. The other pieces I didn't look up their prices, but will probably be around that same price. Soldering them in is not all that difficult, just have to make sure not to get heat near some of the other components as they will be very intolerant of high heat and fail on you (ie, those black boxes you see, they HATE!!!!! heat). I recommend replacing all 9 of the components connected to the metal bar (heat sink). If there is something that electronics hate, it is heat. Those components are bolted to that metal bar for a reason. But ,over time, they will start to break down, especially if they are pushed to near their limits. Without specialty equipment, it is hard to say what their condition is. So, it is just cheaper to replace than to buy that equipment to install something that is at 80% capability.

Help, the ECU really only feeds power out, it doesn't take it in. So, unless you applied 12 VDC to the comm line to the ECU (which, the car starts, so you didn't do that), the rest of the stuff the ECU is telling to turn on and off and that is all from commands generated inside the ECU. The only other external thing that I can think of that would kill an ECU is:1) doing welding on the car (this puts large amount of magnetic interference into the car and it will fry electronics which your ECU is the least of your worries), or 2) you have a failure of the alternator and you are missing an entire field in the alternator (highly unlikely failure) that then causes the voltage of the car to jump around really fast, introducing lots of EMI noise into the car. You would hear this if you turned on the radio as "alternator hum" but this would be extreme.

HELP, that cable is only part of the overall system. You also need to get a computer program called SDD (simplified Driven Diagnostics, or something like that). That program is what lets you get into the ECU and put data in key places. Having just the cable is like having a car with no tires. This is where you are going to need to connect the SDD software to the car via the cable and then via a diagnostic procedure, you are going to insert a key and follow the prompts for turning the car on and off. This is going to give the computer the key number that it will then put into the computer to allow starting. This is where there are no good "how to's" out there that I am aware of that cover the SDD software. You can look on Youtube and see what you can find, but you are going to find a lot of different program versions out there and I am not sure how much they different from say a V1.4 to V1.64.
As for the cable that you referenced, you may want to look at a different cable. Not sure if that cable will work with Jaguar vehicles or not. I didn't spend a lot of time researching it, but I also did not see where it said it was Jaguar compatible. Every manufacturer has its own cable/pinout. So, this is where getting the proper cable is going to save a lot of head banging and general frustration.

Here is the software I was talking about. There is a whole discussion on it and links to the software.

ohok... I do have a computer and all with windows 11 and all. its 300 to program so I was just wondeirng If I get a cable obd2 to usb so I can plug it in to my laptop and if there is any free software that I could use to make it work. I did see smw that if you want to tune a ecm or smt there are some free softwares you could use. @Thermo
HELP, the only "Free" versions of SDD that I have seen are questionable at best of whether they are going to brick your laptop and/or your car. This is one of those things that you are going to get what you pay for. You go cheap, you are going to be paying in other ways. I am not aware of any other software but SDD that can program a jaguar ECU.
