Just got my X Type back OTR.
After three years sitting idle with no MOT due to holed sills and failed alternator I finally got time to do the work. All rot cut out from sills, inner and outer, new inner panels fabricated and welded in then full replacement sills welded in. Alternator replaced. All brake callipers rebuilt. New handbrake cables. New front struts and springs, new fuel filter, new EGR valve, oil & filter change …etc.
Car sailed through MOT and apart from slight grumble from O/S front wheel bearing was running great. Replaced wheel bearing and car was running like new, until …
Glow plug light started flashing and engine cut out without warning on busy road.
Managed to get it started and would tick over fine and Rev up to 4000rpm without issue, but as soon as it was under load it cut out again.
I managed to nurse it home keeping revs under 1500rpm and checked for error codes - none!
Dropped car off at local garage who did MOT and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it, no fault codes on their m/c either.
The day after it did the same again, only seemed to be doing it when engine was warm.
could always get it started and when sitting stationary it would happily sit with engine revs at 4000rpm for 3mins and not miss a beat.
I did a 5 min back leak test and all four injectors were even, see picture.
I replaced camshaft sensor but still cutting out.
Tonight I connected up the laptop ran Live Data on the s/w and took it for a long run, it was driving like a new car again!
Brought it home, sitting idling, took it back out then it happened, cut out just as I was pulling out of the drive and was interesting what the live data was showing…
Fuel Rail Pressure was showing 200000kPa!
Before, Even at 4000rpm it was only around 70000kPa.
I assume the 2000000kPa is a max value and ECU cut off engine because of this over pressure reading?
Anybody seen this before?
Do you think this is just a faulty pressure sensor?
Thanks!
N/S sill replaced N/S floor & sill repairs complete. O/S sill before rot cut out. Rot cut out and rust treated. O/S floor & sill repairs complete & full underside rust treated and under sealed. N/S front arch prior to rust treatment. N/S front arch completed. Injectors back leak test results.
Thanks for the reply Dell.
I had seen the Mr Muscle fix but ruled this out as my actuator arm is very free to move and travels full range. To be sure I disconnected arm from actuator side and manually exercised it, very free with no apparent resistance or sticking.

Had very similar symptoms on my 57 plate X-Type diesel. Cut out once, but would restart, and drove another 20 miles. No fault code. Drove 50 more miles the next day before it cut out completely and would not restart - the flashing glow plug indicator coming back on upon attempting to do so.
Just taken to garage: they think it's the fuel pressure regulator (which I think is more than just a sensor).
My reply is probably a few years to late to help you, but I hope it helps anyone else who comes this thread having experienced a similar intermittent problem.
