gas fumes purge valve canister

gas fumes purge valve canister
I have looked through JTIS but cannot figure out where the purge valve is. The line drawing seems to be somewhere in the engine compartment but high, low, fore, aft? I am lost. Also it seems to show the canister being located on or near the tank which is a huge job to remove apparently. I have no CE light but smell gas inside the cabin when I first get underway. The cap is tight, there are no external leaks, there is no fuel odor in the engine bay or from underneath the car. There might be some odor in the trunk area but cannot pinpoint. Any ideas are appreciated. I was going to try a manual purge or test of the valve with a meter since the driving test procedure is nearly impossible to execute; it would use up gallons of gas!

Thank you for this tip but no I never over-top. When the light comes on I put in ten gallons and zero the trip odo and when the light comes on again, I move the decimal point on the odo and there is my gas mileage. This odor is occurring no matter where I am on that continuum. I have since found the little control board on firewall where the little solenoid thing is and the cylindrical chamber just upstream and the two hoses and cable connector. But what is the long rectangular thing at the rear near the tank plus some electromechanical contraption connected to it? I cannot find a master diagram for this in JTIS; just pieces of it and they are not very good.
