General AC question
Hi All
Yesterday, I went to local mechanic (trusted one) for my AC. They looked at it and guy told me it was low on freon that's why it was blowing hot air. They put freon it (around lb of it or something) and it was cold then, but today it is not.
I also made them put dye in it, I just checked under the hood and I don't see any leak or anything.
Before I go back to the shop, I like to know what might be the case?
MY A/C's lowest temperature is 61 F, does that matter? should I lower it?
I live in Kansas city, Missouri FYI.
Thanks
Patel

maikal, first off, the dye that they add in is an ultraviolet dye. So, even if all the dye leaked out, you probably will not see it.
Based on what you are saying, it sounds like to me that the compressor on the car is leaking (most likely place for a leak since it is the only piece with moving parts). I would say to have them do a vacuum check of the freon system (ie, draw a vacuum on the system, isolate the vacuum pump from the system, then see if you can maintain that vacuum). Between that and the dye, they will be able to tell you where you are loosing all your freon from.

Update:
Mechanic said my high pressure is not giving sufficient reading, while my low pressure is excellent. He showed me there was leak on the condenser(the grill looking thing on the front).
According to them, I need new condenser with dryer in it. Quoted me about $600 bucks with freon + Labor + Parts. Labor + freon (if i provide the parts) comes aobut $160.
So does this make sense?
I found these online:
A/C Condenser - Auto Parts Warehouse
Recommend??

Sounds about right. I would pick up that condensor. Then all you have to worry about is the dryer. Those are not too bad as I recall.

Update,
After they replaced condenser and drier, they were able to locate the leak in A/C hose. He told me that we didn't see that leak before cause we didn't have circulation due bad condenser and drier.
with $600 on this, I got my A/C back.
One thing that puzzles me is that I got A/C checked to 4 different shops before going to this guy, they all told me my compressor wasn't working and quoted me $1000+. This guy kept me around when he was doing his work, and explained the whole thing along the process. I'm finally happy to have trusted mechanic.
Thanks again for all your help

Hi I have a simular problem and I was told that my compressor was leaking oil and the pump on the inside was not functioning properly, so i wouold need a new compressor/dryer/hose, is this possible
04 x type 3.0

If your compressor is leaking oil, then yes you will (If not already) have a problem.... as this oil is essential to the life and operation of the compressor. Note: it will seized-up eventually - without the oil.
It will most likely to be more economical to replace the compressor - rather than have someone pull it down to service/replace all the (internal) seals.
In order to get the warranty on a new Compressor.... it is recommended to also replace the Receiver/Dryer - at that time.
Hope this helps....
