Default Groan when starting to move

I have an 03 x-type 2.5 with 23,500 miles on it.
Just this winter as the weather gets cold (below 40F) I get
a groan from the area near the right front when the car
starts to move from a complete stop., No noise when the temp is warm, above 50F. The groan is
intermittent about 40-50% of the time. The best way to
describe the sound is, as in the days of drum breaks, when
the shoes were very worn and you tried to stop, you would
get a groan. Not a squeal or screech but groan.

Any suggestions as to what this is would be greatly appreciated.

I had something similar happen to me this winter. I had some salt build up on the car and like the nut I am I hosed it off in the driveway. The car sat in the garage for a day or 2 after that but that Monday when I went to move the car - there was this brake drum squeal that emitted from front of the car. After that it sounded like my brake pads were worn all the way down grinding on the rotors. Turns out I must have had some rust build up from the freezing bath I gave the car.

and this is really common on X's, actually all but with the limited sound insulation you hear it alot more. X's also exhibit a groan from the rear and need the bushings replaced in the hub carriers. The really fun ones are when sitting for awhile, or when raining and the pads develope a rust lip where they meet the rotors and POP really loud when you try to drive off for the first time.

Yep, have heard that as well. Went away when I replaced the rear bushings per Brutal's post. Now that the car is garage parked exclusively, the rotor noise is gone as well.

The first thing I though when I read the topic header "groan when starting to move" is that sounds like me when I try to get out of bed in the morning. LOL....(3 back surgeries tends to make it a chore)

My '03 makes the same noise. I was not sure how to describe it, but "groan" is appropriate. I am interested it what the forum experts say is the cause.

THERE UPDATED BUSHINGS FOR THE HUB CARRIER IN THE REAR ON XTYPES FOR MOAN NOISE.

This is the solution I received from a reader of a different Jaguar forum.

Good morning,

This is a pretty common problem. What’s happened is the edge of the brake pads where they sit in the pad frame has developed a little rust. If you hear the sound and give the brakes a quick little tap the sound will go away. Over time you’ll get the coke bottle whistle sound at higher speeds. To fix remove the pads and remove all the rust from the pads. Then wire brush the pad frame you do not want to remove the coating on the frame as it will rust quickly and repeat this problem. It is ok for the pads to have a little movement in the frames; dragging will cause them to vibrate they will not rattle while driving. At the same time check for a rust ridge on the rotor this can be removed with a hammer by tapping it off. If the rotors are junk you can buy replacement Zimmerman’s at Car Quest good quality made in Germany equal to oem pads same place Bendex.
