Default handbrake adjustment

Hi there I've just replaced all the discs and pads on my x type
But my hand brake still comes quite high
Was wondering if anyone knew if there is any adjustment I can do
Or are they self adjusting calipers
Cheers lee
P.s
mine is an 2002 x type

try foot down hard on the brake the with our foot still down apply the hand brake.

If that does not work you my have to adjust the rear caliper by twisting the piston out a little.

jaglee, raise and lower the e-brake a bunch of times. You will feel the handle firm up. Granted, this is assuming that the e-brake levers are not frozen. If an e-brake lever is frozen, it will cause the handle to become very easy and ride really high. If I need to go into more detail, let me know. I seem to battle the e-brake lever and I have done a lot of playing with the rear brake system of our cars.

Under the vehicle there is a bracket that looks like one of these.

By turning the nut in you are taking slack out of the cable
between the lever in the cockpit and the splitter to the wheels.

^whereabouts under the vehicle? is it accessible without a hoist?

My lever lifts very high and never really holds the vehicle. I need to put it in gear to stop it rolling on even a moderate slope.

Just replaced the rear discs and callipers but problem persists.

mojorising, if you just did a rear pad change out, raise and lower your e-brake about 20 times. The e-brakes are self adjusting and by going up and down on the lever, you are bringing the piston out to where it needs to be. I would have to assume that when you did the rear pads, you removed the brake cable and also noted that the e-brake lever returned to the full forward position. It is a common problem with our cars to have the e-brake lever freeze up (gets rust inside the caliper) and it will cause the e-brake lever to not return to the full forward position which will also result in a loose e-brake handle.

If you need more info, let me know. Fixing the e-brake lever is pretty easy. Just need a special socket (14mm pentasocket).

Hi guys. Just a quick reply.

Adjusting the cable is not a solution to the problem you are just covering it up. With the rear calipers on the X Type and Mondeo's it is incorrect to completely rewind the piston back in. You need to wind it back just enough so you can get the caliper back on the pads but they should be just resting on the pads. If you wind the rear caliper piston all the way back, when you pull the handbrake, the piston does not come out far enough to apply enough pressure to the pad, therefor does not hold correctly. Unfortunatly this does mean you are going to have to go back in to the caliper and readjust. Sorry I am the barer of bad news.

Hope this helps.

John.

Just to add to this post. For some reason or other if your X Type has automatic transmission fitted you wont have the adjusting mechanism shown in the diagram.
