Default Having issues with my 2nd coolant reservoir...

Hey guys. My brother has a 2004 X-Type 3.0 and he keeps having issues with his coolant reservoir. His first one essentially exploded and his engine ended up overheating. So he got another motor put in along with a new cooling system, and now 3 months later the reservoir is cracked and leaking again.

My question is: what's causing this? Does any company make upgraded reservoirs? Thanks for any help!

make sure his connector used to hold the hose to the reservoir (the small top hose on the left side of the reservoir) is facing down. one member pointed out it could be hitting against the hood when slamming it shut.

Yep, it was a new reservoir so I'll tell him to look into the warranty. I'll check his connector too, thanks

Finally got a chance to update this thread. My bro says there was no warranty on the reservoir, and he took some pics so you guys can see if everything looks normal. I'm a BMW guy myself so I'm not too sure haha

To stop the tank from cracking do not use the bolt to secure the tank, just twist it on and hook up hoses. The later year x type comes this way.

Do you mean the bolt on the front of the tank?

Yes replaced one on my 02 and was told not to use bolt, stress cracked the tank. My 08 came without the bolt.

I second this info. I went through two of these in a matter of months, with the exact same failure point, the plastic nipple the hose connected to on the side facing into the engine compartment sheered off. I was obviously suspicious, and as I was installing the second one I noticed the hose clamp clips were facing up. I figured that could be hitting the hood so I rotated them down. I noticed in your picture that the clips are facing up, so I recommend turning the clamp around.
