Default Help! 2002 X-Type Limp Mode ECM P1582, TCM P 1573

Hi All

New to the forum and Jaguars but I have 30 years of experience working on cars. I have a 2002 X-Type 2.5 AWD and it is stuck limp mode with a gearbox light and check engine light. I pulled the codes and for the ECM it shows a P1582 – Flight Recorder Data is stored. And for the TCM is shows a P1573 – Throttle Angle Error. I tried clearing the codes and they would not clear. I then went into the data mode for the TPS under the ECM and selected TPS position and voltage. The car is drive by wire so as I was making a data recording I opened the throttle by hand. Here are the results, at idle it is at 9.8% and voltage is 0.89v, 25% is 1.42v, 50% is 2.21v, 75% is 3.0v and 100% is 4.09v. The battery is at 12.6 volts and I did the data checks with the engine off.

I did some reading on the site about the 1573 code and it seems like many people have had issues with it and changed the TPS but my data shows the TPS reading correctly.

I have no idea what the P1582 code is for and when I looked into it it had a bunch of different areas from MAF to O2 sensor so I decided to look at the TPS first because that was the one showing under the TCM.

Any ideas what my next steps should be.

Thanks

P1582:

P1573:

Also: Make sure that connector going to the throttle body (which is hard to see, as it is under the incoming plastic duct - and I hope, that this is the same on X-Type as on S-Type) is connected, make sure that it is not damaged internally and that the wires are not damaged and that the connector pins inside of that connector are not corroded and not damaged. This connector is subjected to a massive amount of heat in the engine bay and it likes to fail.

PS: I just went out and had a look at my X-Type: Yes, that TB-connector on the X-Type is also quite prone to heat damage, and it is also kind of under the rubber air intake duct, but it is more visible as on the S-Type. Thus, have a closed look at that connector..

Also: Your battery voltage is 12.6V. This is - for a Jaguar - kind of on the limit already between good and bad. Charge your battery and see, if that helps.

12.6 not running and over 13 running seams pretty good to me but I put it on the charger overnight and will check it this morning.

Yes that TB connector was in bad shape and when I started diagnosing the car I thought that was the problem for sure because as soon as I touched it it came unplugged. I cleaned it up and reconnected it and still have the same problem. I wanted to see if the ECM was seeing it so I disconnected it and got a DTC for the TB, I reconnected it and the code went away so I assume the connection is good.

This problem started out as an intermittent problem, the car would drive with no issues then every now and then it would just go into limp mode. Might happen on low speed acceleration or happen going down the highway. I would just stop the car turn it off, then restart and it would be fine for a few more weeks. Now it is limp mode and I cant clear the code to get it out.

As far as the TPS it has 4 wires going into it, does anyone know if that is a double sensor, as it two sensors in one, one for the ECM and one for the TCM? The ECM seams to be seeing the sensor ok because it doesn't show a TPS fault but the TCM does. I would think they use the same one?

From the diagnostic code list your P1582 could simply be because the car is in limp mode due to a throttle problem.

The TPS is a dual element but the wiring diagram shows both signals going to the ECU. Pins 2 and 3 of the TPS connector go to ECU pins 75 and 76. Pins 1 and 4 of your TPS connector should be power and ground. That is ECU power supply ground, not necessarily the same as body/battery ground.

You can find your electrical guide here, but check your VIN to be sure you get the right one, there is a MY 2002 and a MY2002.25 guide so some electrical changes during the 2002 production.
