Default Help adjusting the headlight levels

I have the manual adjusting headlights with two little bolts on each headlight I assume adjusts side to side and up and down. Problem is, the driver's side especially is hard to reach and I'm not sure if I should tighten or loosen the adjusting bolts to raise them up. I assume loosening the lower bolt (counterclockwise) would raise them? It's just hard to do because in the daytime I can see the bolts but need to do it at night when I can see where the beams are pointing. it it necessary to remove the battery to access it?

No. It's super easy to get to the adjusters. They are both on top and in plain sight. If you are having trouble adjusting, you probably have the dreaded failed headlight adjusters.

Probably 137.5% or more of all X-types will have those internal adjusters fail.

But fortunately the fix is reasonably cheap and fairly easy to do. I'll look it up and post a link here for you. In the mean time, try to use the forum search engine, search term: headlight adjuster.

Instructions for removing the front bumper cover:

A good thread on putting in the new adjusters:

The ebay links may be old. But I think the parts are still available on ebay. Search "Jaguar x type headlight adjusters" probably will return dozens of choices.

I think I just have the manual adjusters. I don't know. The low beams are point towards the ground like fog lights. I took it to the place I got it from and they said they adjusted them but they are practically the same. I will give it a shot tomorrow. Seemed like one of the adjuster bolts was at the bottom of the headlight but I could be mistaken.

It is the manual adjusters I'm talking about. If you or someone has fiddled with the adjusters and the lights still point down ( some of them point up. It's a bit random) then your adjusters internal to the headlamps have crumbled to dust and chunks. Order a set on ebay. Get enough to do both sides. Take off your bumper cover. Take out the headlights. Heat your oven to about 180 - 190 degrees F. When your wife is not home, put the headlights in the oven one at a time. For about 5 to 10 minutes. Use gloves, it'll be hot. Take it out and pull the clear part off the black part. Then you can replace the adjusters. Once you are happy with that put the black and the clear part back in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes to soften the glue and then squeeze the pieces back together. Repeat with the other light.

To adjust the beams, both the up/down and the left/right controls are on top accessed through holes in the front crossmember. Use allen wrench. I forget what size. Probably 5 or 6mm.

Note this, however, if I am right and your adjusters are toast, you can turn that up/down beam control all day long and it wont do anything, because it is no longer connected to anything inside the light.

Here's another way to tell: take that round screw on cover off the back of the headlight, like you are going to try to replace the bulb.

GENTLY try to move the reflector around. If it is firm, the adjusters may be OK, but if it is floppy loose, you're adjusters are toast.

Yea tried that just now and my drivers side projector is loose like crazy and the whole reflector wobbles around.... Errrr!! It sucks because this is supposed to be under warranty but how are they going to buy a $50 part and open up the headlights and fix them unless I do it? This is so annoying. I've had the car 2 weeks and I'm already exhausted from working on it and didn't have the money right now to fix headlights in a car I just bought.

Went ahead and ordered 2 sets of those headlight repair pieces on ebay. Figured since I just got the car I could either do it now and enjoy the car, or wait six months or a year and drive around with bad lighting at night until I decide to do the repair or sell the car because of it.
