Default Help cross country check engine overheat

Check engine light came on now car stutters every six miles then overheats. I pull over turn the car off then back on and it runs fine for six more miles. Then do the same thing. Check engine light stays on. HELP! I'm in the middle of nowhere

Update autozone codes say its the engine temp sensor. Think it's safe to drive?

Don't push your car when it is overheating... Terrible idea.... If it overheats for real, you're out $4000 for a new engine. Count your losses... Temp sensors aren't too hard to replace and should run you around $200. You could probably get it fixed now if a shop has some spare time.

Default Update Des Moines

Car is in he shop temp sensor for sure, they had to order it hopefully it will be in tomorrow and fixed. One question for anyone who might know, is this common for sensors to just give out? Worries me driving across states and the car just up and quits ( I know break downs can never be predicted) just worries me how hard it is to find parts and expensive!

Anything can fail at any time, and a temp sensor is one of those things. Sadly, there is no way to predict when things will just fail without warning. I have never heard of a temperature sensor being a big problem on these vehicles, yet that doesn't mean that they can't be a problem
