help needed
My 2002 X Type is having other problems. Ever now and then the engine seems like it misses. I took it to a foreign car repair shop. I ask them to replace the 02 sensor, replace the thermostat and find why it was missing.
All they did was tell me one of the plugs was stripped and someone had tried to repair it, but did a lousy job. They didn't repair it just told me what is wrong, and charge me $200. If I understand, you have to remove the intake to replace the 02 sensor or to replace the plugs. What gaskets do I need and is this something an American car guy can repair. I love my X-Type and would really like to get these problems repaired.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Tommy
Tell us what engine you have. 2.5 or 3.0.
I read some of your earlier posts about the heater and possible bad thermostat. If you ran the car a lot while under temp I could see where that could lead to poor running. These modern Engines are very sensitive to operating temperatures.
I have seen several threads that tell about the seals under the intake runners. Yes the runners come off to get to the aft plugs. And while its true your engine if it's like mine was built in Cleveland, I'd be careful who I turned loose on it. If there is one thing I have learned from doing the engine swap in ours, it's that these rascals require some pretty mad wrench skills for some jobs. I'd think putting a timesert in a plug hole would be pretty mad. I did it on a Triton V8 and it was no picnic. I don't know if any of this helps you or not but it seems to me you need to find someone with some Xtype experience.

Thanks, Mine is a 2.5 and looks like your picture. I have the 02 sensor and the thermostat to install. I have restored a 65 Plymouth Barracuda, but that seems simple compared to this. I live in a small town and have trouble getting anyone to work on this car. The import repair service that didn't repair it before has put me off 3 times which tells me they are really busy or don't know how to repair the car. I ask for an estimate and was told they couldn't give me one. That scares me. I have tools including torque wrenches, but don't know if this is something I should even think about doing. I really do thank you for any advise. It doesn't really seem that hard from what I have read, but am unsure. The car gives me a consistant 25 mpg. I drive 50 miles a day. I need heat and to replace the 02 sensor so I can get it inspected.
thanks again.
thanks again.

I hear you. There is just a whole lot going with your car I think. I'll send you my phone number by PM and you can call me this weekend. I'm not going to pass myself off as the expert here but I have had the engine out and back in again on ours so I at least know where everything is on the 2002 model 2.5.
As for your mechanic he is trying to tell you he is afraid to work on your car without coming right out and admitting it. IMO. I can say this much; my play cars are Alfa Romeos. Nobody works on them but me. Cause no one will f one up faster than the best American or Japanese car mechanic with the nothing but the best skills and the best intentions. It's just a different mindset. And I see a lot of those same tendencies in the Jag.

First of all do you get any DTC (codes).
I understand that AutoZone in the US does read them for you for free?
Before I would dig deep into a problem like yours I would check for the fault codes and see what they tell me.
To change the plugs won't hurt, but plugs are rarely the culprit of a misfiring issue. These days have gone ...
I would put my bet on a defective ignition coil.
If you would give it a try anyway, half of the sparks can be changed in 15 Minutes w/o removing the intake duct.
The other three require a more complicated but not impossible job.
There's a fantastic write up on this forum covering that exact job.
See the FAQ section ...
Cheers,
David

Thanks for the advise. The mechanic did tel lme one of the plugs at the rear of the engine has been stripped and someone did a bad job repairing it. They used some type of coil device I have seen at parts stores. He recommended replacing the head. I ask for a price, but never got one. The car is showing a code with says it is an 02 sensor. I bought one from the Jag dealer along with the thermostat. The mechanic said to get it there. I'll have to check the code again, but seems like it was the right bank rear or something like that. I work in a retail store and have extended hours this weekend but have monday off, and will atleast replace the thermostat to see if I could get some heat blowing. thanks again for your help.
So you got 2 Problems on hand, right? No heat and misfiring?
I am not familiar with the complete X-Type technical specs yet, but the no heat issue on the bigger XJ models have been common and there was an electric operated valve that got stuck over time and leaves you with a cold heater. Try to investigate that a bit more. Again, it's like with the sparks, seldom only a thermostat is the problem these days ...
*edit* - Do a search for "Heater Control Valve", but as I said, I'm not sure if the X-Type is equipped with one.
With your stripped spark -
The sparks and ignition coils of the right bank are only accessible when the intake manifold has been removed (about an hour's job).
Did the guys at the shop really remove the intake only to do a diagnosis?
Sounds a bit strange to me ...

Not sure, I dropped it off and picked ir up later. The miss isn't constant, and thats not even why I took the car in. I wanted to repair the problem so the check engine light would clear so it could be inspected.
Some funny goings on here!! First off, as there are four O2 sensors, you have to get the codes read to identify which one is at fault. If one is faulty, the MIL should be lit.
Secondly, I can't see how it's possible to be sure that one of the bulkhead side sparkplugs can be shown to have a stripped thread without removing the inlet manifold. As it doesn't sound like the manifold has been off, what's the evidence for the problem - a stripped plug in this type of engine would certainly be a first in my eight years of X Type forum activity!
To finish, if an O2 sensor and the plugs need replacing, they really are very straightforward DIY jobs for anyone who has already removed/replaced an engine in almost any car! Honest. There's plenty of advice available if you search this forum. You should also get a copy of JTIS, the CD workshop manual, available as a download from the stickies at the top of X Type section. Invaluable!!

That spark plug well on the X type looks a lot like the one on the Triton, and if it has a stripped plug, there's no reason to replace the head. Those Timesert tools do a great job repairing spark plug threads. It'll kill a whole day but it beats a teardown.
I stoped at Advance Auto parts and had the scan run. It shows code P0037. That means Bank #1 Sensor # 2 if I am correct. If it warms to over 35 in the morning I plan to replace the thermostat. This week I will gather info and perhaps next monday either tackle the 02 sensor or find a mechanic to help. I have limited time lately to work on this jag. thanks, I haven't returned any calls due to the limited time and sickness with family at home. I truly am thankful for your help, and hopefully will solve this problem soon.
