Default Hesitation and cutting out driving me mad!!

Hey guys, I've taken lots of advice from here over the last few months but never posted, so here goes.

I’ve been driving my 55 Plate X-Type 2.0L TDCi SE Estate for a few months now, and things have just gone from ok to worse. I’m hoping someone may have some insight or may have experienced what I am going through right now.

There has always been a very slight hesitation when cruising since I have had the car, but as it occurred very seldomly, I didn’t worry too much about it because I intend to get a Terraclean done and though it would probably clear it up. Also, it never really had the power I thought it should do after driving a 53 Plate Mondeo for several years, which has the same engine.

The first problem started when driving through the Isle of Wight on a hot day, where the car went into limp mode and behaved very badly, with the coil light coming on making the car cut out, and then the engine light. After the initial cut out and restart, nothing else really happened and it was ok to drive on, and the engine light eventually went off after 5 starts. At this time, the car also started to cut out just after starting up quite frequently, although this seemed to clear itself when the weather cooled. As a precaution, and after reading several threads on here on a similar issue, I changed the MAF sensor, and blanked off the EGR. The stalling on start-up still happened, but not as frequent, and I planned to take it an auto-electrician to get the wiring checked out.

Now over the last few weeks things have got considerably worse. Initially, whilst using the car heavily to move house, all was good, but then it started cutting out on the motorway with the coil light flashing, and the hesitation also increased. When it did cut out, I would pull over, restart and all was good. What I’m finding is that when the engine is cold all seems ok although there is a very slight hesitation when accelerating hard, but as soon as it gets warm, the hesitation seems to be getting worse, and even more so when on a motorway going to and back from work. When the hesitation is happening, if I put my foot down to accelerate or climb a hill, it cuts out with a flashing coil light. When this happens, I simply pull over and restart with no problems for a few miles until the hesitation starts again. I replaced the Cam sensor a few days, and the stalling on start-up seems to have eased, but the hesitation actually seems to have gotten worse.

I had the codes read last week and the only code that come up, after all the previous codes were cleared, which included a MAF issue was P0105 Manifold Absolute Pressure Or Barometric Pressure Circuit Malfunction. I’ve got a MAP sensor on the way, which I’m hoping may help, but is there anything else I should be looking at? The fuel filter has recently been changed too, so unless it wasn’t primed properly I’m hoping it’s not that. I should also mention that I’ve had the turbo changed in the last few weeks because it seized up. Everything that was happening before was happening after the turbo change so I’m pretty confident it’s not the turbo.

Really sorry for the long post, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated, because it's now starting to drive me loopy wondering what it all could be, how much is it going to cost in the end!

I've been doing more research into this, as I have been doing for the last week. Could a faulty EGR valve cause all the symptoms I am seeing? I still have my MK3 mondeo up my brothers drive for sale, so was thinking of swapping the EGR to see what would happen!?

Presumably on a 55 plate it's racked up a few miles?
Maybe 80k - 100k?

For sure in any event, I'd recommend taking your EGR off and cleaning it, might be a good idea to do the inlet manifold whilst you're at it!
Might even be a new EGR required.

You say you've changed the fuel filter?
Did you use OEM filter?
There's been reports of aftermarket ones causing issues.

If only the mileage was that low. It's a little over 160K.

I may have a look at the EGR to see how clogged up it is, and then look at getting someone more qualified to look at the manifold, depending what state the EGR is in. Someone else tonight has pointed me in the direction of the ECT sensor, but not sure what the symptoms of that failing are really.

The fuel filter is from an official Jaguar dealer, so is the genuine article..one would hope!!
