The Honeymoon is over......
Well, not really, but after 2 trouble-free years, I'm having a wee a/c problem. If I start the car cold, and drive at highway speeds all day, the a/c works just fine; but if I stop and idle for a bit (such as happens if you get into stop-and-go traffic) the a/c will suddenly stop cooling, and it will refuse to re-start cooling for the remainder of the day. Not until the engine is stone-cold will the compressor re-engage. Neither will the aux fan. It is as if the a/c had been switched off. Refrigerant levels are well within spec. Is there an 'over temp' or 'over pressure' cutout switch somewhere in the system? I have even tried switching the system off at the console when this happens, and driven at highway speeds for a period to make sure the airflow over the rad is plentiful, but to no avail. Any suggestions?
Robert, there is an overpressure switch (set at 560 psig as I recall) that if the freon gets too warm, the pressure in the system will get too high and trip the compressor clutch off, therefore allowing the freon pressure to bleed off and get back to a more normal state. If you look on the outlet hose of the compressor, you will see the switch there. It is a simple 2 wire switch.

Sorry, Bob. It used to say on my avatar, or garage, or somewhere, that I have an '03 X-Type 3 litre.
