Default Hood release cable popped off

While being tech'ed for last weekend's Autocross I went to open the hood so the tech-dudes could make sure my battery was fastened down. I pulled the hood release and it flopped right up in my hand. I looked down and saw that the cable end had popped off the handle. I've owned the car for almost three years, put ~30K miles on it, and have opened the hood many times.

The fact that the cable has popped off the handle twice so far this year clues me that something has happened, but the end of the hood release handle looks ok. Has this happened to anyone else and if so what did you do? Did you, somehow, secure the cable end to the handle or did you replace the hood release handle?

Thanks
