Default How difficult/time cosuming to change a clutch?

I'm capable of doing the work, but it's clearly not a simple job. How long does it take, and are there specialty tools required.

I'm not looking forward to spending days underneath the car. But if I'm going to do the job, it would be nice to be properly prepared.

My clutch pedal won't come up some of the time especially after high RPM. The clutch disk friction material is known to crack, and I suspect it is holding the pressure plate out a bit.

So, I'd love any first hand suggestions!!!!

Thanks!

When I went to NP02 (New Product 2002) for the X400 we were advised to drop the powertrain complete with the subframe. We were sold a special telescopic lift/jack to lower/raise the subframe.

I never liked the method so I just lowered the subframe and left the engine/trans hanging.

I then changed the gearbox like any old front wheel drive car, suspend the engine, tilt the gearbox down and pull it out the left side.

A few years later Jaguar came out with a REVISED method to remove/replace the gearbox!!!

You guessed it............... leave the engine in place and just pull the gearbox!!!!!!

Here is a TSB for the revised method.

Note the change of procedure on page 10.
Transmission Replacement Procedure
Note: This is a different Workshop Procedure than the one currently described in JTIS 19.

You can ignore all the transaxle numbers for the recall, just the labor operation is what you need for guidance.

Thanks.

That's an involved procedure with a few special tools. Will I absolutely need them? They look like seal pullers and a slide hammer...

Wow, a device with which to hang the engine.

Looks like a good set of instructions.
