Are you just trying to adjust the cables from where they connect to the shifter? If so, you can just remove the shifter boot (it should snap off) and then you can see the linkage cables and adjust the cables where they connect to the shifter. Hopefully that helps!

Disguay,

I have another question? I was able to do the above mentioned but was not able to determine if what i was doing helped any. This is what i did, diconnected cable from shifter knob then removed cable from housing from the plastic bracket holder. Then i got confused on how to actually make the adjustments.

Is it as simple as twisting the round plastic housing in front of the metal connector on the cable or do i to adjust the metal portion on the cable like adjusting a hand break? its a very tight space in there and not much room for tools.

I went under the car this morning to look at the linkage cables. I was able to make some ajustments their but nit enough that made much difference. Now is it just jaguar or is my whole clutch and gear system messed up. why can't i downshift into first. 8 have to come to a complete stop to go into first. no problems downshifting from any other gear. Is this a saftey precaution or a malfunction?

Mine does the same thing... I can't get it into 1st gear without coming to below about 4mph. I have had to force it into 1st once going about 10mph, but it wasn't very easy. I expect that it is a safety precaution to protect the transfer case from excessive torque.

As I was reading this thread it made me curious, so I tried it in my car. I was able to shift into 1st from 2nd gear at about 20 mph. You can do it, but unless you are really good at heal and toeing it will be hard to get a smooth gear change. Plus, the revs are so high that if you are accelerating you would need to downshift in another second or two anyway. Unless you are in stop and go traffic going 2-3 mph and want to shift into 1st I’m not sure why you would even do that, but for what it’s worth you can shift into 1st in an X while moving.

Out of all the manual cars i have had this is the only one that does easily downshift into 1st from 2nd. I dont think it is just because it is awd. it will downshift but not without some effort. its like my mercedes c240 awd. by default the car never uses first gear it starts out in 2nd unless you program it to start off in 1st for faster acceleration. but all my lower end cars like my honda civic, kia spectra 5 wound downshift into first from any gear even if doing so wound damage the heads and pistons on the car.

The shifting is so complicated on my x type my wife cant even drive the car, heck some of my friends with standards cant even drive it without grinding gears. i have perfected the shifting enabling me to drive it smooth like an automatic or like a sports car. but i am curious to know how many others experience difficulty downshifting into 1st from 2nd. thanks for your input.

Mobile, I have had guys who have worked on cars for 20 years get in my car and stall it right off the bat. Hell, I even stall it about twice a month when I'm turning and my VC kicks in. My first week of having the car, I couldn't get it to go from 2nd to 3rd without grinding and everyone who drives my car has the same problem. I'm curious to see what others think though!
