Default I am the proud owner of a 2002 2.5L manual sport x-type=)

I just picked it up this evening. It isn't perfect, but pretty darn good for $5k. 97k miles on it and the driver seat edges need some reconditioning, but it runs perfect. I need to get a realignment. Does anyone know anything about the gas gauge saying it has a full tank then dropping to a quarter, but it really still has a full tank? The seller told me it will do that sometimes. I thinking it is the sending unit.

also, does anyone recommend a good leather repair kit. I did an ebay search and found some located in the UK. Does it need to be Jag or does anyone know if a generic good kit? It's a light tan interior by the way. I think I need to clean it and apply the dye, but I'm not sure.

I seem to remember an old TSB about the fuel level sender intermittently working. There was a problem with the harness which was updated? Sorry wish I could be more specific. Perhaps a Tech will stop by with a better answer. Of course you know that means dropping the gas tank, etc. 3 hour job?

I don't mind a 3 hour job too much. I will do an oil change and spark plug change first and repair the leather seats then worry about it. I need to find a good US supplier to repair the seats.

www.leatherique.com sells dye, and filler for cracks. They are US and well known in the BMW world.

Had same fuel level issue on my 02. Fuel sending unit was replaced (under warranty so I do not know the cost).

I think the unit is $100, but I would attempt it myself if I get the time and have step by step instructions.

Do you find it to be quick? I am wondering if it's worth getting in manual?

No, it's not quick. I have a manual Z4 with a 2.5L and it is a lil more responsive since it weighs less. I don't think it is worth getting a manual if the purpose is to get a quick car. I got it since it was an perfect sport one for $5k from an original owner. I'm considering selling it and getting an auto since I really got it for real estate sales and the z4 wouldn't work with that.

My z4 is the first year manual and for sure it will be my 02 2.5 manual x-type. If he had an auto and didn't hold down his traction control button then it won't let him take off fast. I didn't know that at first when I had my car. I thought I hit the button and the orange like comes on, but you have to hold it and it shuts it down completely. After that my z4 will burn some good rubber.

The 3.0 manual is .6 seconds quicker than the auto (6.6 vs. 7.1). Having driven both before I bought my car I thought the manual was a night and day difference in sportiness, especially on the freeway when passing. Can't speak for the 2.5 though. Although not "sportscar" quick, I am more than satisfied with the overall quickness and handling with the Sport model. It all depends on your definition of "quick" and your expectations I guess.

Well said Alfadude. The manual 2.5 I'm sure is half a second faster than the auto 2.5. I just got my car a week ago so I haven't really stepped on it. If I drove the auto, I probably would appreciate my manual more. I commute in traffic a lot for work so I don't have as much of a need for manual as I'd like. LA traffic sucks.
