Default I test drove a 2005 manual 2.5L.

I'm going to buy an x-type, but not sure if I should get auto or stick. It's not a sports car, so maybe no point in getting a stick shift. How reliable is the auto tranny? I see an 02 with only 67k miles and an 05 with 91k miles, but maybe in 05 more issues were worked out. A manual with 3.0 would be nice, but I don't even see much 3.0L. On msn it shows the stick and auto having the same gas mileage. Is this true? It's a 5 speed auto and stick so maybe it is.

I drove an '02, an '03, and an '04 before buying the '04. All were manual trans. The '02 was the only 3.0 (but the 1st gear syncro was toast).

As I gather, the later the year, the more likely it'll have fewer issues.

You're right, this is not a "sports car," but driving an auto trans is so boring IMHO.

BTW, I'm getting 26-28 MPG in non-aggressive mixed driving. Not bad, huh?

26-28 is great. I have a 2.5L z4 now and get an avg of 28+, but it's a small car so I look fwd to keep some good mileage.

I have a 2005 3.0 manual Sport and love it. I think the manual really transforms the car compared to the auto. Have had it almost 2 years and have put over 40K miles on it and it's been near bullet proof. Have never felt it lacked power and have been satisfied with it's "sportiness". No, it's not a sports car, but then again it's not meant to be. But 0-60 in 6.6 isn't bad either. I think the autos are 7.1. Yeah, it would be nice if there were some more cost effective performance mods available and it would be great if they would have beefed up the transfer case, but overall I can't think of a used car for the money I would rather have and it's a tank in Wisconsin winters.

Seems like by 2004 all the initial teething problems were worked out. Do a search on here for all the most common probles with the early years. There does seem to be less issues overall with manuals vs, the sticks, but that could be because there are less of them out there and after 2005 they discontinued offering a manual transmission.

On a higway drive without the a/c on I can get almost 30mpg. Probably 3-4 miles less with it on. about 23-24 with mostly city driving with the a/c off and about the same less with the a/c on.

I wish there was many to choose from with stick and 3.0L. I don't see any manual 3.0. I do see a lot of inexpensive 2002 for under $7500, but those are all auto. There isn't even much sport models here. You would think in Socal there would be lots.

Social?????? I'm missing something.

Sports are a lot less commom and manuals even more so, especially 2004-2005. And by 2005 3.0 manuals are much harder to find. Am guessing by 2005 they might have sold a couple hundred sport/manuals as they only sold less than 11000 cars total in the US. They are hard to find, but they are out there if you look, are willing to travel and patient. I decided what I wanted and it took me about 6 months to find just what I wanted and I traveled 500 miles to buy it. Kind of scary at the time, but it worked out.

In your search be careful when comparing cars. A lot of features come with different packages. For example, heated seats and a sunroof aren't standard. Do your research so you can compare apples to apples when evaluating cars of similar prices. Do your homework and you'll be rewarded.

So Cal = Southern California I believe is his intended reference, but as one word I initially read it as "Social" as well.

I'd prefer the manual with the 2.5 for sure. You need to keep the motor boiling for good performance, and I like a stick for that type of work. Wish i had one. A manual 3.0 like Alfa's would be ideal.

thanks for clarifying that. I never use that abbreviation, and the one time I do I mess it up, haha. There is a manual 2.5 close by for a ridiculously low price near me and i'm going to see if it is legit. Since the engine uses a timing chain, as long as it is running fine 97k miles should be ok right? My z4 has 122k and it purs like a kitten still.
