Alfadude (and other interested parties),
Yes, they are. They were designed to compete with BMW 3 Series & others of that ilk, which they do quite well. They were the biggest selling Jaguar ever. BUT AS YOU SAY, do your homework. The bakelite thermostat housing 'down in the valley' warps over time and leaks coolant. It can be very hard to detect and catastrophic failure can be just that - 'cat'astrophic. If you are at speed or don't notice the sudden temperature change such as in heavy traffic, you can 'cook' the engine right smartly. There is a modified housing in machined aluminium available as a replacement: I strongly reccommend that all Jaguar owners upgrade this component (V6 or V8). And keep an eye & ear on the timing chain - when it starts to rattle, get it & its tensioners replaced, or a deep and abiding sorrow will set in. Thirdly, just because there is no dipstick on the gearbox, ignore it at your peril. The fluid must be changed as specified, and with the correct fluid. Otherwise the thing that 'goes Bang! in the night' will be your wallet.
Keep a good quality leather dressing on your seat, and polish the outside when the rain loses its 'bubble' on the surface, and you will enjoy your car for a long time with quite low maintenance expenditure.
Cheers,
Languid

KDW, the positives, for the price, it is a very nice to own and as long as you maintain the car, it will serve you very well. I have owned mine for almost 4 years and the work I have needed to do to the car is not any different that any other car I have owned with the same mileage on it.
As for the negatives, I see a few:
1) the transfer case is the weak link in the drivetrain and if you drive the X-Type like a sports car, it is going to make your wallet a very light thing to have. Drive the car sensibly and the transfer case will outlast the car.
2) the headlights are touchy and if you are not easy with the headlight assemblies, they will tend to break and lead to a more costly repair, especially if you have the HID headlights.
3) the expansion tank seems to develop cracks in it due to the pressures that the system runs at. Granted, like with any vehicle, it has its known problems.
4) from my experience, the rear calipers tend to fail at a higher than normal rate. I go through a caliper a year on average. The E-brake mechanism fails. But, for about $100 and an hour of my time, it is something easy to overcome.
Overall, I am very happy with the car and who knows how much longer I will drive the car. part of me wants a new vehicle, but at the same time, I am looking at a car that requires minimal work on it at the moment and is something that others look at me and wonder how I can afford something like it. I just laugh and smile, walking away chuckling inside.

....how many heads it turns around here....
....how people go "oooh you've got a Jag"....
....how it gives you a taste for Jaguar & makes you badly want an XJ....
....how (all) cars in Switzerland are so over-priced....
....how reliable mine would be, despite all the bad reports on forums....
....how retrofitting the missing options becomes an addiction....
....how I can't imagine ever selling it now....

I'm 17, and I get people turning their heads everywhere I go. For me, the jaguar is a perfect car for colorado. I was looking into buying a subaru with my earnings from my summer job, but I got one of these babies for the same price! Sure it spends some time on my jack stands, but working on it myself just makes me love it even more. The only thing I'm worried about is that I won't be looking to sell this car anytime soon

I had to chuckle to myself when a guy told me he could never afford a Jag is why he never owned one yet he owns a Harley worth more and a ext cab 4X4 worth more than my Jag. I didn't have the guts to tell him..... LOL!

Inky, the fuel doors are something that shouldn't be messed with. You might be able to save money painting it yourself with color coded spray paint you can buy online.
Kdw4him, I get the expensive jag talk all the time. Unfortunately, I have to tell them how much I paid for the car cause otherwise people think I bought it with "daddy's money."
