Default Identifiying pre and post (2004.5) Revision cars?

Hello all.

Finally getting started on my 06 Wagon manual conversion and could use some help in my parts hunting.

I think that I have found a manual 3.0L that would have been manufactured after the 04.5 major revisions in wiring, sensors and engine management. The goal in finding a post revision car was the hope that it would greatly simplify the swap when it came to wiring and the engine config.

While this is great news, it's several hours away from me and the owner hasn't been very forthcoming with the answers that I was hoping for. I get where they are coming from though, the car has been off the road for years and I suspect he would much rather have it gone than spend a bunch of time talking to me about it.

With that in mind, I'm again asking for help from the great minds here. Is there anything that I'm missing that can help identify the later cars from photos or while I'm trawling junkyards?
  • Is there a designated VIN breakover? And if so does anyone have it handy?
  • My understanding is that most cars after the 02 (feb) 2004 build date should be revised, is this correct?
  • Is there another revision in between that can affect the search?
    • I believe that I've seen mention of a 2004.25 version...?
  • Visually I'm not seeing many if any exterior changes, is there something that I am missing?
  • If I have photos, I have been using the steering wheel controls as a tell (the change from side buttons to top rollers being the most obvious change). Is there something under the hood or obvious in the interiors that I should be looking for?

Anything else that I'm missing? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

Also apologies if this has been answered before, I couldn't find a clear explanation in my search.

extheaterkid, there is no revision that is referred to as "2004.5". That is the "2004.25" modification that Jaguar did. If you are going to a junkyard and trying to find parts for either end of the "2004.25" spectrum, these are the differences that I know that you can simply look at a car and determine which it is for a MY2004 vehicle. They are:

If you look at the driver's door, there is a sticker there with the manufacturing date. If it is March 2004 or earlier, it is a pre-2004.25 vehicle. April 2004 or later, it is a post 2004.25 vehicle.
If you look at the passenger area fuse box in the dash, if the fuses run 50-99, it is a pre-2004.25 vehicle atleast as far as the wiring goes. If the fuse box is also number 1-50, then it is a post 2004.25 car.
This one is a bit more part specific as a lot of these parts will work for either vehicle. But, if you look at the part number on the parts, if you see 1X43, that is an pre 2004.25 part. If you see 4x43, that is a post 2004.25 part. With this being said, you are going to find both in a lot of the cars because things like lets say a coil can be used for both pre and post 2004.25 vehicles. So, if it was built later or the coils have been replaced with Jaguar parts, you may see the 4x43 in say a 2002 vehicle. Where this becomes important is in the computers. there are differences and paying attention to the 1X43 and 4X43 is going to be critical unless you find a reference that says the two are interchangeable.
The last thing is the transfer case. There were different transfer cases used and if you look at the case, it will tell you. I do not recall the obvious differences, but I am sure if you do some looking around here, there will be pictures of the two side by side. I know the internal differences, but that is not very helpful when crawling on the ground.

Thermo,

Thank you as always for your help and understanding! The information provided has been huge. Part of my confusion was with misunderstanding the difference between the Model Year designation and the Revision designations (2004.5 and 2004.25).

Since I posted the owner of the parts car has gotten back to me with several of the photos that I had requested. One was the door plate with the VIN and build date. The other was a photo under the dash where the computer lives. In exciting news the car has a 4X designated ECU and a build date of 04 / 2004. I am now super hopeful that if we can agree on price and transport options, I can have it in the next few days.

One other question on revisions: was there another major one post 2004? Or were they simply the standard running changes that all cars normally receive?

I know for example seats aren't readily swap-able pre 2005 in most cases as the airbag sensors were heavily changed.

There was that 2008 facelift, also mentioned in Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_X-Type
But I do not know the details of that facelift.

The "facelift" was just that, some esthetics that slightly changed the look of the car (different steering wheel, the plinth on the back of the car changed slightly, some options became standard (DSC for example)) So, really, it is nothing to be super excited about. Granted, I thought that came out in 2007. Maybe Iam wrong. I know there is a different wiring diagram for 2007 and beyond cars.

According to the Wiki-info the facelift was first shown in 2007 on a motorshow, but then it was introduced from 2008:

Wiki: "The X-Type facelift debuted at the 2007 Canary Wharf Motorexpo, and went on sale internationally during 2008, with United Kingdom sales from March."

The 2007-8 revision feels like more running changes than a wholesale update then. I know that the front bumper and grille changed as well (I bought the open '08 grille from the UK last year).

I should have the manual car here in the next few days and can really start digging into the nuts and bolts of it.

Maybe you would appreciate my "DIY facelift", too:
