Default Jaguar 2003 X Type

Hi Folks, I have just joined the forum cos I just bought the Jag X Type. I have always loved the leaping jag emblem but they do not fit them as standard anymore.

I have bought a new leaper for the bonnet but I can't work out how to fit it, can any one help with instructions please before I start drilling holes in the bonnet and end up with a tea strainer.

Welcome to the forum jimman,

(I've moved your question from the UK Regional section to the X-Type section.)

You'll get expert advice here from members with the same model. Put that drill away until the guys tell you exactly where to drill the holes.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

Graham

That is because it is illegal.
The leaper may look good but it is not very pedestrian friendly.

Hello & welcome ..nice to see you here , As stated the Police may frown upon the installation of a solid metal Jaguar too close to the front of car . Every thing is governed by health & safety these days .

Try Googling the legal implications too get some answers before tou procceed with permanent fix ......Pete .

It contravenes UK Construction & Use Regulations. The relevant sections are:

Regulation 53 Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 states:
"No mascot, emblem or other ornamental object shall be carried by a motor vehicle first used on or after 1 October 1937 in any position where it is likely to strike any person with whom the vehicle may collide unless the mascot is not liable to cause injury to such person by reason of any projection theron."

Section 40A Road Traffic Act 1988 as amended by the Road Traffic Act 1991 states:
"a person is guilty of an offence if he uses, or causes or permits another to use, a motor vehicle.... on a road when.... the condition of the vehicle..., or of its accessories or equipment.... is such that the use of the motor vehicle.... involves a danger of injury to any person."

Jaguar chose to dispense with mascots. Other manufacturers such as Rolls Royce decided to make mascots retract on impact in compliance with the Regulations.

Many people choose to ignore the regulations and fit mascots. To date there has not been a prosecution.

Now you have the facts and can decide for yourself.

As one of the "colonials" I can't see how the leaper on my hood can strike anyone, unless I run over the bloke! I would, therefore install one if I liked the look. I truely think that a Jag without the leaper is undressed. Just my two pense....

I have a leaper fitted to my car, Upon reading the threads about it being illegal I hadn't considered this before I fitted it I bought a replacement as the one I had was a fixed type the replacement is a spring type these I don't think break any laws? To fit it you'll need to offer the leaper up to the bonnet (hood) where there is a large hole on the underside, once you are sure you are happy with alignment and confident of you drilling skills mask you top where you plan to drill, mark the holes and drill to small pilot holes offer the leaper up again and assuming everything is good drill the correct size hole, remove masking tape and bolt on from the underside. Remember to fit the rubber weather strip to stop bonnet (hood) from rusting. Hope this helps? Good luck.

We have a quite a few more walkers in this crowded isle.
A leaper is a fine tool for unziipping a pedestrian.
Will the next Jaguar have a pop up hood to ensure a soft landing?

I like the look of the leaper up front but my hood will remain undrilled unless I get a growler for it.

I have yet to see a growler on a Mitsuoka Viewt,

Probably the best known growler.

Certain folks in high places ignore the regulations.

If you must have a mascot, make sure it's effective. ER2 has St George slaying the Dragon as her personal mascot on the State Bentley. The lance appears to be a very effective 'pedestrian unzipper'.

I should think that being given an extra orifice by a JAGUAR LEAPER would be a point of pride by a pedestrian.

"Yes, I was run over - but run over by a Jag!"

I guess I can rather understand the laws in the UK, however. Driving on the wrong side of the road, with a car that is assembled backwards and all.

For us Britsish customers it certainly is.
Both the hood release and the clutch foot rest are on my passengers side.
How quaint!
I have an auto with cruise so I do not need a foot rest as I can put both
my feet up.

You can address me "Sire" - Yes I will accept that.
( I will admit to being called by many names)
