Default Key remote issue

Well, two days ago my remote fob worked. Yesterday no such luck. I went to the dealer, they told me that the remotes die for the x-type very often (great the one thing i need to work). I was quoted at a price of $235 for a new remote (not even including the key portion) I replaced the battery in my remote (dealer did it) and still no luck. So, unfortunately I guess the remote has died.

I refuse to pay 235 for a f(cking key remote so I did a search on our good old friend ebay and came up with this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2004-...=p4506.c0.m245

I am assuming that it will work for my jag. I dont know much about the FCC# or anything like that. I was just going to switch out the remote portion and place it on my key.

Any, ideas? Thanks for the help

Good job Chris. This sitehas a wealth of information. Its interesting to see how the remotes have evolved over the years.

peewee, the dealer said the X type remotes die often, really? Thats not good. I wonder how many of our members have had their fob just up and die. Does this truly happen often ?

Who ever told you that at the dealer is either an idiot, or lying. The key to the X is not specific to that car. It's the same key that all other modern Jags take. There's nothing special nor different about them.
This isn't the first time I have heard about problems with the keys, but I wouldn't go as far to say that they fail all the time.

If your fob isn't working you might be able to get them to fix it. The price you were quoted is quite bloated as well. When I bought my car the gm dealer I bought it from paid less than 80 bucks for an entire key/fob and programming. Most I'd pay is about 150. $239 is rape. Talk to a different dealer.

Why would you pay $150 if you can get one form the link I posted above for $50????
You can program it yourselfI belive the info isin the FAQ section here but they
supply instructions when you buy the remote.

Gee, what did we do before keyless entry???

thanks jagxv6 for posting that. I did a search and found a rough pdf for programming the remote.

Yeah, I think the dealer is trying to stiff me hard. I have gone to him before just for a diagnostic on some brake drum noise, and they in the usual fashion, tried to sell me all sorts of stuff that i didnt need. I got sick of it and told them i was not going to have any more work done and the service advisor got pissed..lol

The remote issue was another load of bs that he tried to feed me as well trying to get me to purchase another remote through their dealership. I am sure its the original remote for the vehicle. However, I am sure its dead since the new batt didnt do a thing.

If i purchase the above remote for 45 bucks, there should be no issue if i switch the key portion with my old remote correct? I dont feel like paying the 65 bucks to have them cut me a new key and "program" it.

Yes you can just switch the key part of your old remote to the "electronics" part of the
new remote. They say they include programming instructions with the new remote. The simple instructions are also here in the X Type FAQ:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/m_18265/tm.htm

Glad I could be of help.

Got 2 fobs for mine off ebay (UK) for only £10 for the pair.
There is a guy on there selling new ones every 2 or 3 months really cheap.
People buy them and try selling them on and when they dont sell they ask for best offers as ebay is flooded withthem every so often.
Thats good news for us in the UK where the fobs are 433MHz but no good if yours is US where its a different frequency at 315MHz!
Programming the fobs is very easy and takes no time.
Info is available freely online on how its done.

I had the same issue described above this week. I stopped by my dealer today and he showed me how to re-program the remotes,a dn it fixed the problem.

Peewee: have you tried re-programming them?
