Looking for a Good All-Weather Performance Tire

We're in Chicago, so we get a full serving of all 4 seasons. 2005 X-Type Wagon. We've got the OE Continentals on the back, and a pair of Goodyear Eagle RS-A's on the front. Why? It's a story about road hazards gone awry.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with 2 more of the RS-A's, but was curious to know what you'd nominate. I'm not looking to drop a LOT of coin. I, like everyone else, am looking for a good value.

there is no such thing as all weather tire.. and certainly no such thing as a performance all season tire.
You have an all wheel drive car, and live in a snow bound city.

There is absolutely no excuse for not having winter AND summer tires.
It is just plain silly to spend the money on a jag, and the long term premium to operate an all wheel drive car, and not use winter tires.

The long term cost runnning snow tires in the winter and summer tires in the summer is much less per mile than running no-season tires.
Snow tires are less expensive than summer tires, so you dont wear out the more expensive rubber in the winter. It is a win-win situation.

Beyone that, all it takes is just the smallest dent, curb-rash, wheel -unalignment, or worse to offset the cost of winter tires anyway.

Please if you are going to live where the snow fall...... GIVE UP on a year-round tire.

If there was a way to pound this into everyone's head... I would LOL.

I understand your point. When I was growing up, my parents changed from snow to spring tires each year for decades. I remember always seeing 4 tires in the garage.

But I'm stuck for space, and $$'s tighter than normal (as I'm sure you know). I've no choice but to do the devil's bidding and fake my way through with "those tires".

I find that if you choose tires that are labeled all season and the treads are straight without any water channels leading away from the center, you should fair well. Usually the center line tread is for ice and such. But as for an all wheel drive car, you should be fine with the stock tires. A buddy of mine had an Exclipse GSX with AWD and turbo, this thing was quick as hell, corned incredibly even with almost bald tires in the rain. Just turn and hit the gas. But stopping thats another thing.

WRONG... only winter tires will be on in the winter.

there is no technology out that that can increase grip.. except for the right tires.

If you are on a budget... as we all are... get snow tires.. at least you will have traction for the next 5 months...- they are also cheaperto run mileper mile. Hopefully you will have some money for summer tires later on.

I really think that snow tires are extra important on an awd car... it is the only way to benefit from the extra traction.
