I have a 2003 X-Type in my shop now with no dip beams. I pulled the bulbs and BOTH are burnt out.

They are the same H-1 bulbs that fail in the 1998-2005 VW New Beetles.

Check the bulbs first in the headlamps.

they all stopped working at the same time. and i replaced the right side bulb about 3 months ago. the marker lights work but only when the alarm is set and turned off.

Lrover, if your side marker lights (the ones next to the tires) are lighting when you activate the alarm, but do not light when you activate the headlights, then you have a really interesting problem as you are using essentially all the same wiring for both functions. So, to have it work for one and not the other has me a little stumped at the moment. You may want to look at the side lights when you activate the door locks to make sure that the lights are bright, not dim. If they are dim, then you have a wiring issue where you somehow running the two bulbs in series with each other, not in parallel.

As for your low beams. I would tell you to remove relay R11 and then install a jumper wire between the battery positive and #5 terminal inside the fuse box where the relay was. If the lights come on when you install the jumper wire, then your problem is either the relay or the headlight switch. If the lights do not come on, then you have either 2 bad bulbs or a wiring issue inside the fuse box (make sure to check both of the fuses for the low beams to make sure that they are not blown).

If you need more help, let me know.

On a side note, is your car an early 2004 or a later 2004 car. The fuses got renamed during that time and can lead to confusion.

i guess my wording was wrong the side markers are the blinkers i guess. the orange ones next to the low beams. i tried jumping the #3 and #5 in relay #11. only thing that came on was the little bulb in where the high beams are. would the bright light switch have anything to do with it. it does not work properly. when its pulled back it slips goward again no letting the bright stay on unless you hold it in the on position.
