I'm so glad I came across this thread. I'm having the same issue with my '02 X-Type. My low beam headlight, on the passenger side, recently went out. After trying to change the bulb myself, I got some help and we found it had melted in the socket. I went to my local Auto Zone and got the only socket the guy said was used for my brand of bulb, and it only has one wire (the factory [?]) socket has 2 wires (yellow and brown). Thank goodness I work with an electrician because he will be soldering some wires for me until I get around to finding some HIDs.

Could someone direct me to a great, decent set that won't break my wallet? Since this thread was back in 2009, I figure some things have changed.

Thanks!

Until I get around to installing HID's, here's a solution that for 5 years has extended the life of Sylvania bulbs and kept wires & sockets from melting:

1) Drill a small hole thru the bulb base and solder a dedicated ground wire. I used spare 16 guage wire - probably overkill, but it was lying around and works well. The factory headlight sockets provide a poor ground, which you'd think would reduce amperage, but the electrical resistance of the poor ground generates heat, which shortens bulb life, melts wires & sockets.

2) Power the bulb with a female, right angle quick-connect and 16 gauge wire spliced to the factory harness.
