Default MIL on but OBD reader shows no code

Hi,

I've got so much help and advice from this forum by just reading (thanks a lot everybody!) but now it seems that I couldn't find an answer to my problem.

I've got a X 3.0 2002 / A with 80k miles on it which now lights both ABS and the engine light. There definately is a problem with the ABS (it activates constantly). This is probably due to a faulty wheel sensor.

The car runs quite ok but I'd like to investigate a bit before I start trying the suggested air leak fixes (brake booster valve, pcv line etc). So I'd like to get the OBD codes read myself.

I purchased a basic 80eur OBD II/OEBD reader from a local Finnish automotive DIY-store which I tried using today. All I get is "no code" from the reader.

If the MIL is on and the cruise if forexample disabled, shouldn't it at least show some code? Would you say that the problem is with the reader or should I look elsewhere?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Sorry about that. Perhaps you've got a bad code reader or need to revist the instructions. If you've got a constant CEL and restricted performance as you describe, you should have a code of some sort.

Hi ptl.....sorry I can't help but maybe one of the members / techs can chip in with ideas?
Failing that you could check out the general tech help section and maybe ask on e of the techs directly if they can help?

all the best

I can read the P and C codes with my OBDII reader...
I read a faulty wheel sensor that threw the ABS light. no problem. It is not the cheapest reader.. middle of the road one.

Thanks for all your input,

it seems that I have to get an other obd reader and/or visit a Jag shop around here to get the codes read. Mine is a generic white label model which is also sold here in Europe under the name Autostar EOBD/OBDII/CAN Code reader. Seems to be working well at least with some Volvos (they've managed to pull out also those ABS-codes) but not atleast with my jag . As jimmy said getting the faulty abs-sensor figured out with a basic obd-scanner should be possible with jags as well(?).

Regarding the ABS I would suspect first a faulty sensor in my case instead of the welded drive shaft sensor rings failing: http://www.justanswer.com/questions/...sport-2001-abs. Should be much easier when I found those codes.

Btw what are those codes you get out by holding down the trip reset button at the end of the turn signal lever while you turn the key? I noticed earlier that someone has asked that before without an answer that time here but couldn't find that thread anymore.
