Talking New to the Site!-Lookin for advice on a winter wheel package

Hi everyone!

I recently bought an '06 X-Type with the Proteus Wheels. Looks great-cherry red paint, tinted with 30% all around, put chrome Jaguar license plate frames; and with these wheels its definitely a sharp looking Jag. Problem is I live in Buffalo, NY and will be needing a winter wheel package soon. Not worried about looks for the winter, just a functional and cheap option to run for the harsh winter months. I have a tire guy, but need a rim option that will fit (I've been told steel rims don't have room for the calipers on the X-Type). Please advise, thanks for the input!

I have the 18" wheels as well. I went out last winter and got 16" steel wheels and winter tires. I have 0 fitment issues so not to worry.

By the way, the car is like riding on a cloud with the higher profile tires and is excellent in snow.

When I had my x there was no way in the world I could just slap some black steel rims and drive the car around in the winter.

Check tirerack and find something that fits what you want. They have a lot of 16" wheel options for you to look at. Total with wheels, snow tires and shipping you should be able to spend less than $1,000.

Print off some of the options you want and see if there is a local tire/rim shop that can help you out, you can always haggle them down.

SidewalkMan,

Would you mind telling me where you got your rims, or what the measurements are on them? I think to cover all bases I'd need the offset and width of the 16" rim. I'm excited I won't have to spend a bundle on winters. Most likely will search online for the best option on rims. Thanks so much for the advice, it'll save me a ton!

06Proteus, check out the link to tirerack that I put in my last post. They have a lot of options that are inexpensive and still look good.

These Sport Edition F10 wheels are $96/wheel...

I picked up a set of 17" wheels and tires from tire rack 2 winters ago and they have been awesome for the snow and ice in ohio. I think I got everything for under $1000

I just drove into Les Schwaub told them I wanted 16" steel rims for my car, they looked it up and sold me some. I think the car looks tough with black steel wheels.

I'm on the west coast of Canada, so realistically a bald set of all seasons would have been fine, we get measurable snow accumulation maybe every 4 to 6 years. I got the winter tires free, have 1 season on them so decided since I've got directional performance tires on the 18s winter tires and rmis couldn't hurt.

I have 18x10 and 18x8.5 Porsche Ultralights with adapters and Goodyear Ultragrip 225/40/18 on all four corners for my winter setup.

Other than the monster truck sidewalls of the 225/40, they look pretty good and ice/snow performance is terrific. I'll take pics with them on the car when/if it threatens to snow in Seattle and I mount them.

It's all relative I guess - I haven't mounted anything with a sidewall bigger than 255/30 in a couple of years - other than snow tires that is. Moral of the story is the Goodyear Ultragrips are great and fairly cheap in 225/40/18. I'd throw them on my BBS Melbournes if I didn't already have them on the Porsche wheels.

Look through craigslist and the local for sale ad's for a use set of 16 inch X-Type wheels. Get a set of all season tires and you will be ready for winter. I have driven my X through the bad Northeast winters on the stock Conti's and now Goodyear RSA's without an issue what so ever.

If you were closer I have set of Tobago's in my garage that I would let go cheap.

Pete,

How badly do you wanna let that set go? I'd pay shipping if the price is right. send me an email if you're interested in selling...cwidmer33@gmail.com, maybe send a pic of the rims too. Thanks!

They are not perfect, with some rash.. Good for a set of winter rims. For the price I want for them I think shipping would be more.

Pete,

All I'm looking for is a set of winter's. I'm serious about purchasing if you want to. Please let me know, I'll be making a decision this week and would definitely prefer used Jaguar rims as opposed to steels or some random after-market rim.

Hey 06Pro, I'm from Buffalo too, it's nice I finally found somebody from Buffalo here. I study in UB =D. I really like the proteus wheel you have on your X. Right now I have Enkei Rims with some off brand tires on my X from the previous owner. They are bend so I just ordered new wheel. It is called the Motegi mr116, they are not the best brand, yet I got a whole new set for $500 so I have no complaint. I doubt these black rims will look great on your car. Well they just arrived at my place yesterday. I'm looking forward to put it on with Conti Extremecontact DWS next week and will let you know how it rides. It cost around $120each for 225/45/17. If you are all about winter tires, I found the General Altimax Arctic, they have got really good reviews, never tried them. The General Altimax HP (All season touring) seems not bad too, they cost a little bit less. I will let you know about the tires.

I'm no expert, but just in case, the wheel you are looking at should be around 16x6.5-19x8 something like that, the bolt size is 5x108, offset is around ET40.

I just opened it up and take a picture of my new wheel

Hi there I'm from Alberta...I know I know! Lol

Can u help...need the place or by any chance u have the part number where u purchased those steel rims! I just picked up a 2006 X-Type with the 17" OEM alloys and contis tire and the ride is less than desirable and the pot holes I can only imagine Are going to beat the living day lights out of the finish and damage the factory alloy 17's so I desperately want 16" or even 15" steel and put a winter tire package on my 2006 x-type 3.0 AWD. Can u help???

THANKS FOR NOW!
