New Trans fluid break in time?
Got an 03 x type 3.0 awd. Car felt like it was low on trans fluid, decided to drain and fill with some Castrol multi vehicle import and some Lucas trans oil additive. The car was super low on fluid, found some small metal shavings on the drain plug but nothing to crazy.
Put in 7.5 quarts then a full thing of Lucas additive which is half a quart. Drove the car around for a 5 minutes putting it through all the gears. Car still felt kinda jerky when moving through certain gears. Is that just because I got to let the fluid work its way through over a longer duration? Or something else?

The proper method is to remove the drain plug and let it drain and then add 3.5 quarts, drive the car to warm the fluid and then pull the drain plug and drain it and then again add 3.5 quarts. drive again and pull the drain plug and refill again with another 3.5 quarts.
By draining and adding 7 quarts all at one time you are way overfilled and the transmission will act strange.

Bad news about that is I only have 4.5 quarts left after today. Will it always only drain out 3.5 quarts? Or do I have to manage that while it pours? I would only really be able to do that cycle once with the fluid I currently have, would that be enough?

When you pull the plug this time you will get way more than 3.5 quarts.
When you are first time draining you will only get 3.5 or less quarts. If the trans is low on fluid you will get less than the 3.5.What you get is all that is not in the system/convertor.
Your best course of action at this time is to drain what is in there and regardless of what comes out only put 3.5 quarts back in. That should bring you to the correct level.
You can then at a later time do the proper drain and fill sequence.

Thanks for the help guys! Ended up dumping what seemed to be around 1.5+ gallons. Then filled back in 3.5 quarts. Trans did feel better after. Will do a full cycle on the near future but thanks for all the help

The fluid level needs to be correct!!
Why don't you just check the level as described in the repair manual?
Don't guess............ KNOW.
Guessing at the fluid level is guessing.
