Default Newbie X-Type Questions

Hello...
I've recently purchased a 2004 X-Type Estate here in the UK. The immediate issue is that the unlock button on the key fob doesn't work. The previous owner said that he took it apart and it is quite corroded but he just didn't want to pay to replace the fob. I've called a Jaguar garage and they gave me a replacement cost of 117£. I've found it online at XTypeParts.com for 29.95£. I've e-mailed them to confirm that it is the correct part for a UK X-Type Jag. Before I spend the money I just wanted to get confirmation that I can in fact change it out myself and reprogram it myself. I've also seen posts about needing two keys? I only have one key and this fob which is only partially functional. Any help/advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

aborland, as long as you have a functioning key, you are good in programming the keyfob. You need 2 programmed keys if you are planning on adding a 3rd key (not keyfob) to the vehicle. So, if you get a spare key, you will be forced to the dealership or a higher end lock smith to get the second key programmed to start the car. Keep in mind that modern day cars have a dual system in that you need the key to be cut correctly to allow the tumbler to rotate and the signature inside the key has to be a matching number to what is in the computers of the car to allow the car to start.

Default Yes, you can

Arborland:

I bought a replacement fob online, new and un-cut, for about $60. I couldn't find anyone but the Dealer willing to cut it, but at least I didn't have to pay their markup on the part and the programming.

You can program yourself - which you have to do after a battery replacement anyway - by following these steps (which I found somewhere on this forum):

Jaguar X-Type V6-3.0L - Keyless Entry - Remote Transmitter

Note: All required remote transmitters must be available when carrying out this procedure.

1. Open driver's door.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "auxiliary" position, then turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and back to the "auxiliary" position four times.

Note: A chime from the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) will indicate programming status has been enabled.

3. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF" position.
4. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
5. To program the transmitter, press any key within 10 seconds. Note: If the remote transmitter has been accepted, the GEM will make a chime.
6. If any other remote transmitters are to be programmed, press any button once on each transmitter within 10 seconds.
Note: A maximum of four remote transmitters can be programmed
7. Close driver door.

Complete
