Default No sound. X-Type 2001

Hey guys.
I'm new around here since i just recently bought my first Jaguar, a 2001 X-Type.

I have a problem with the audio of the car, there is no sound whatsoever.

Radio, cassette even no TV sound.

Everything worked fine until a few hours ago when i noticed that the radio is not working, then i tried a cassette, after that i disconnected the battery and reset everything. Still nothing.

Earlier today I was cleaning the boot, and i put a jack box under the NAV device in the boot.

Could that be a problem with any of the cables? I've read on the forum that there is an optical cable around there but would that cause the problem?

First thing to check is the mute button on your steering wheel; make sure it isn't stuck down.

PanamaJag, thanx for the pic but i don't have those buttons on either side.

i still think the problem comes from that optical cable in the boot...

Once my sound system went out after my son drove my car. Everything seemed fine and their was power to the unit, but you could not hear anything in any of the modes.

What happened was his foot must have hit a fiber optic cable to the left of the steering wheel under the dash. If you look in there and it is unplugged it should be pretty apparent. Plug it back in and away you go.

Hope it is that simple for you.

Today i removed the head unit from the dash, thanx clyons for the video. i took the player to an electrician and he told me it's perfectly fine.

Alfadude, i checked it, it's connected.

Looks like I will have to wait until i will find another x-type so I can test the optical cable in the boot. i suspect there are some problems there because the optical cable that goes into the Navi device has a tag on it that says PHONE. and the motorola phone unit doesn't have have an optical cable connected to it...

i will post some pictures later cause it is hard to explain.

well it's been some time since i last posted about this problem...

i went to the official Jaguar Dealer in my town, asked them about the optic cable in the boot, they gave me a ridiculous price for it. i decided to buy it off ebay and have it shipped from England for less than half the price Jaguar asked.

So the cable arrived... i got it hooked up in the boot.

AND STILL NO AUDIO.

i am getting quite pissed about this problem. and i also have a problem with the passenger door... it does not open from the inside after the car moves and locks all the doors automatically.

Good cars these Jags.

silly question but have you checked the fuses?
does your nav disc eject ie power to the unit in the boot/trunk
do you have premium sound? the amp is attached above the dvd player.
take a picture of the electronics in the boot and post please.
I do not know the fuse numbers for the AMP and DVD unit for the pre 2004 but i am sure someone on here can point you in the right direction. as for the labels on the optics that`s all they are perhaps the previous owner did some work back there and added some stuff

I had a customer that had the same fault. It turned out that ALL the door speakers were 'blown'.

I installed a 'good-used' speaker in one of the doors and got sound from it!!!!!!!!!!
I replaced all the speakers (about $70 each from the dealer) and the customer drove away happy.

Paulc732: yes i took it to a guy who specializes in car electronics, computers, diagnoses and other stuff like this. he checked all my fuses, and hooked the car up to his laptop to see if he can find something about the audio... nothing

nav works, it does power up, it does eject, it shows no problem on the screen but i don't have the map CD. the previous owner didn't give it to me.

i do not have premium sound.

motorcarman: i changed all the speakers too
i read your post on another topic and i tried this.
i bought after market speakers though.

wish i could hear them to see if they are better:lol:

Ok two things I would like you to check.
1. down by where your left foot is when your driving is a fuse box.
Next to the fuse box are some plug connectors your speakers go to the blue plug that has 16 connections see if that plug is still connected.

2. wire up one of your speakers with about 2-3 feet (600mm - 1m for our metric friends) of wire strip free ends about 1/2 inch back.
remove your radio unit from the car leave it plugged in.
now on the back of the unit slide the wires to the speaker into
pin 3 (white/blue) + speaker wire
pin 4 (Yellow/Blue)- speaker wire

then try

pin 5 (White/Green)+speaker wire
pin 6 (yellow/red) - speaker wire

see if the speaker works the first one is left full range the second is right full range.

I suspect you may have kicked the blue plug out by your feet (assuming you are in a left hand drive car)

Paulc732: i have checked the cables near the fusebox. everything is plugged in.
check the pictures, maybe you see something that i am missing...

....running out of ideas on this sound thing. Nothing left but to take it out and swap it with another radio and nav system....

Go to jagrepair.com for your wiring diagrams.
look for the mute line (orange, I think).
Check for a voltage on the mute line. If no mute signal, mute is not engaged.
Then, check audio from the speaker lines from the rear of the audio head, easily accessible at left footwell. if no mute and no audio, suspect the head unit.
If you do not have premium audio, fiber-optic will not impair your audio. It is wired directly from the rear of the head unit. best of luck.

thank you for the advise Bill
i looked at the diagram and tried to read it... but i don't understand nothing of it.
Can anybody tell me where is the mute line? or even show it to me in a picture? please
i am a newbie to this car and i don't want to damage something else instead of fixing it.

well... problem solved
i had enough of trying to fix it with spare jaguar parts etc.

so i bought an aftermarket kenwood player. no cd. just USB, 3.5mm jack
and it supports FLAC songs.

i hope you guys like how i integrated it
