Patrick, welcome to JaguarForums. Lots of good information and people here. We pride ourselves in being a better car club. As part of this, we ask that you stop by the New Member section and tell us a little bit about you and your car. This will also help you learn who the key people are around here too.

As for your problem, it can be many, many things at this point. So, this is what I would like you to try and then report back here. This will eliminate some things. Get into the car and leave the door open. This will leave the interior lights on. Now, attempt to start the car. Does the overhead light remain on bright, does it dim, or does it go out completely? Also, while holding the key in the START position, look down on the center console. Do you see a read light near the tip of the e-brake lever? Yes or No. You can also look at the info message center on the instrument cluster. You may see a message about "Security Failure". Do you see this message?

Answer these few questions and this will help a lot of us start ruling things out on your car so we can atleast get down to a few systems that may be causing what you are seeing.

Patrick, from the sounds of things, you have 1 of 2 issues. The more likely is that your battery cable(s) are bad and you need to replace them. This is a common problem with the X-Type. Probably a good idea just to replace both. Then lets see what you have then. The other possibility is that your starter gave up the ghost and now is not able to roll the engine. But, that would be unlikely as not many starters have failed on these cars. There are some other really obscure potentials, but we won't start diving down those rabbit holes till we take care of the much more likely issues.
