OEM Speakers or Aftermarket Ideas?
Hey guys, two of my speakers in my X-Type aren't playing anything at all, and one of them is playing but distorted. All the tweeters are working well though.
I will remove the working speaker and test it on the other doors to make sure the speakers are what's acting up, but if it is indeed the speakers, do you guys think I should go for some more Alpine Type Rs? Or would you go for other brands?
I want to keep the cost to a minimum, but I want the best sound quality for the buck. I'm a bit of an audiophile so I want to get some speakers that are really good value. Also, I'd like to keep all the wiring and everything stock.
Thanks in advance!

You might get an idea from my thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ade-faq-64614/
I know it's a long one, but it should show you pretty much all you need to know.
Since you said "all the tweeters" it's safe to say you have Premium Sound, and yours being a 2006, it'll be the same general setup as what I put into mine.
You can got for basically any aftermarket 6.5" midbass speaker, with those adaptors as shown in the thread.
The trick is the tweeters, you can leave your existing ones in (if they're working, why not?) If you change them you need to replace the capacitors from the old ones, or go with a proper crossover.
Changing just the midbass will be easy and cheap enough, with those adaptors.
You will break pins that hold the door card in place, get 10-15 spares before you start.

Thanks for the help!
I want to keep the tweeters but I definitely need to get those new midbass speakers. Do you guys know of some that are really good value? Some that wouldn't be more than some Alpine Type R's? I want to either get Alpine Type R's or upgrade if I can get better ones for the same price.
Also, where can I get the pins for the doors?

Hey guys, these speakers would work in my car right?

All I need are the two midbass speakers, I don't need new tweeters. I've read some things about coaxial and 2-way and 3-way speakers and I'm getting a little confused. This website says they will fit in the rear doors, but doesn't say anything about the front, which I don't understand.
Thanks

Hello,
I've learned alot by going to the Crutchfield.com website (no affil) and typing in my vehicle info.. They can tell you what fits your car and you can choose how much you want to spend on what fits from any manufacturer.
I eventually chose polk audio (polkaudio.com) as they are a great value for the money. There are and infinite number of companies making car speakers. Polk has a decent reputation and have some very low-cost options (as well as high end).
I believe the polk audio website also has a fit guide for cars.
Good luck! There is nothing like a great sound system in a great car.

I'll be completely honest here.... I installed sony xplod speakers all around (cheapest s*** you can find) and really love them. I also disabled the stock sub and wired in a cheap sub and amp. I thought that this was just going to be a temporary system, but it sounds better than my friend's car which is top of the line jbl all around. Just a little food for the thought

While we are being honest...any brand-name aftermarket speaker will be better than the factory ones...
Those speakers in your link will still require an adaptor, like these ones HERE
The factory midbass speaker is a 1-way, single cone only. Most aftermarket speakers will be 2-way (which means they have a tweeter on top of the midbass cone, like the ones in your link) or co-axial, which basically means two separate speakers (separate tweeter).
You "need" just a 6.5" single cone speaker, but there is no reason why you couldn't install a 2-way like those ones. Just means more treble, which you can adjust for with the EQ.
But no matter what, you'll need an adaptor like those ones on ebay, for 2-reasons;
#1 Aftermarket speakers are "deeper" and you need the clearance from the adaptor, or else the magnet will foul the window when it's wound down.
#2 The OEM mounting of the speakers is a unique pattern, i'm quite sure you won't find a speaker that fits the 3x screw holes. And if you did, the will probably go too deep into the door & collect the window.
I don't know how you mounted your speakers disguay, but that's my experience. Also, those adaptors I used allowed for using the factor wiring, which is on the outside, to pass through the adaptor & connect to the speaker terminals. Like this;
You should change all four midbass speakers at the same time, to the same type, to keep the tone balanced.

Thank you both for your replies. I will most likely get all four midbass speakers replaced.
But where should I look for them (one-way speakers)? If I don't want to change the tweeters, then I can't really look in the "component speaker" sections online, but then the "two-way" sections wouldn't be my first choice either.
I'm going to be doing the installation with my brother, and we don't have much experience so I'd like to keep it as simple as possible.
I want to get the speakers for around $150-$200 a pair, and I want to keep the OEM wiring and everything.
Thanks

Here's some "1-way" 6-1/2" midbass speakers, cheaper than your budget...
PowerBass 4XL-65-92 (4xl6592) 6-1/2" Competition Grade Composite
You'd also need those adaptors.
Can't say anything about them, hopefully they are just cheap & cheeful...

The guys at Crutchfield can help you buy the right components for your car. I'd bet they can walk you through it in just a few minutes and meet your budget with something. Then at least you'll know exactly what you need and can shop anywhere with the info.. Just tell them your situation.
Its worth a try...
It worked for me.

Regarding adaptors. I made my own adaptors by cutting off the flange portion of my old speakers, which will be a stout ring that will naturally fit in original position, and drilling them with the new speaker hole pattern. Adequate offset can be accomplished with rubber washers. (I've seen other threads where folks mount with new holes directly into the panel material..not too elegant and not as strong).

Any details you could tell me would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Here is a link to the ones I bought. Turns out they are listed as 4 way speakers, but they really only function as a 2 way. I like them with the extra treble because I have 2 600 watt subs in the back and the extra treble makes it very balanced, but if you don't like the extra treble, you can just disconnect the stock tweeter.

Thanks disquay for the pic, I ordered a set of 2 way and a set of component speakers and was planning to make a set of spacers out of mdf. But from your photo it appears that some aftermarket speakers will clear the windows... correct? Looking at the stock speakers (non premium audio) I was suprised to see they are just paper, definitely not for the sound levels I am going for.
I may still cut out a set of spacers, just so the grills have something to press against when someone pushed on the doors. I will fit them when they arrive (tracking says they will be here in a couple more days... the anticipation! lol) I'll be sure to take some pictures as well.
If anyone is popping their door panels off. Don't worry about salvaging the clips, they are 8 for $3 available at www.northlandfasters.com part# N20634 (among other places). I pulled my doors off and ordered 5 sets though I think there are only 7-8 per door, can't remember now.
