Default Oil Pan Gasket

Hello fellas new to this forum so you have to please excuse me. I am a proud owner of a 2002 Xtype with a 2.5L engine. While having my last oil change I was told that my oilpan gasket was starting to go out. I do see some leakage on the garage floor. My question is has anyone changed out the oilpan gasket on their Xtypes or had them changed? How was the ordeal or how much did it cost you? The shop I took it to was charging me $200 on just labor and I see that I can get the gasket on Ebay for about $25. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The oil pan gasket on the xtype isn't the easiest job due to one bolt that is "hidden" in a tight spot near the transfer case. You can do it if you want to sacrifice one of your wrenches and bend it/cut it in a way to get it up in there. It's not very easy and $200 is actually not a very bad estimate for doing this job on the x type.

drefish99, the problem with the oil pan gasket is that how the transfer case is mounted to the engine, one of its brackets covers up a bolt for the oil pan. So, without modifying something, you have to drop the transfer case out of the way, to drop the transfer case out of the way you need to drop ..... You get the picture. With that being said, there is a "cheat" that a hole can be drilled in the support bracket so you can access the bolt that way. Supposedly it is ok and no one I know of has had any problems, but I still question that technique. The other method is to loosen the bolt that is in there, cut the head off from the bolt. From there, the pan can be removed and the rest of the bolt removed. Then on the install you simply get a shorter bolt and all goes back together just fine.

$200 for labor on the oil pan gasket isn't bad at all. Some members have had to pay $1000 or so due to the time needed to remove all the interference. I would ask how they are planning on doing the job. If they say nothing about having to drill a hole in the support bracket or having to cut a bolt in half, they haven't done an X-Type oil pan before and they are in for a rude awakening and a big bill on your part.

$200 is too cheap and too good to be true. Is this shops rate $20.00hr? The labor time from ALLData is 9.3hrs to replace the oil pan gasket. What exactly is the shop doing for $200.00 I would find out first. I actually only charge 8.00hrs to do the oil pan gasket on those cars. Which is an 1.50 less almost then the standard customer pay time. But my shops rate is $130.00hr. The part with oil and the gasket is about $60.00 plus tax and other miscellanous fees. Do the math. That comes out way over $200.00. I would walk away from that place because they may be doing a half *** job for $200.00

I don't think that shop have done replace oil pan gasket for X-Type before, he don't know what involved in that job.
Thermo, I just remove my oil pan on my 04 X-Type to day, I made a tool from a 13mm wrench, loosen the bolt under transfer case bracket, but the bolt was too long I can't get it out, finally I end up drilled a hole in the bracket any way. How do you cut the bolt head in such a tight place?
