I have read all of the posts and saved everything in my computer for a long time to do this job.
Need to replace the inner seal (s?) in my transfer case for my 2003 manual transmission car. I have it apart and need to clarify a few things.
Looking at the first photo #20, I need to separate the top part A from the lower part B by holding it in my press on the lip C. Is this correct?
Looking at photo #30, F and D are bearings, so I will press on E. Is this correct?
Once they are apart, I will see the 1 and only seal that is inside. Is this correct?
I should then have an O-ring and standard seals on the case covers, inner and outer sides. Is this correct?
Should I put in the small drain plug in the case as described in another post since I have the case apart?
My transfer case was running quietly without any problems until I pulled the axle and caught the seal. So I hope to be on the road this summer…with your help.
I'll try to add my 2-cents worth here, even if I haven't been in those realms, where you are currently, before.
I have an automatic X-Type, and I assume that does not make a difference in regards of the TC (as you have a manual).
I have removed my TC meanwhile several times, and I even attempted to open it up - but after removing all those bolts, it would not want to split open, i.e. you are 1 step further.
I have picked 2 of my pictures, to confirm what your issue is:
So this is the circlip, which you did not remove before pulling the axle thru the TC?
...and this is the internal seal, which is damaged now and which you want to replace now?
I just wanted to clarify, because I would not have thought that you have to pull the part apart, which you plan to pull apart now, to get to this seal, which I do not see in your pictures...
From all my reading you need to press the two sections A & B apart to get at the seal.
Yes I did remove the clip from the axel but most likely did not keep the axle flat as I pulled it out as the seal spring came out with the axel.@##$%^&%^*(^%%$
As far as splitting the case, mine came apart vary easy, almost to easy. You can tap in some screw driver to split the seam BUT they can can only go in a 1/4" (6 mm) or so as there is a lip on the one side of the case that fits into the other case. I will get you a good photo of it next time I am in the shop.
Like most things on our Jags this is not a bad job at all. It should take an hour to do it once you have done it once.
From the photo in your linked thread in the post from Jesse it looks indeed as if there are two seals... - but by the looks of it I would at least expect them to be generic seals.
I can't explain it - my TC did not want to come apart - and it was due to a lack of trying: I hammered a proper chisel into the TC, where the split line is and nothing happened.
Looking at your pictures again: Since the seals are buggered anyway, there is no further damage you can do to the seals, hence, before you try to pull A/B/C apart, I would try to "go fishing", i.e. I would try to find a suitable tool to pull the seal(s) out without taking A/B/C apart....
