Well, if you ever need them fixing, don't take them to that shop.

My mechanic, however, (a Jaguar specialist) tells me with a smile that he hates the X-Types because they rarely need any repairs. My experience with the X-Types (3 of them) over 16 years bears this opinion out completely.

I needed some work done, dealer refused to do it, the guy fixed the problem.
So he can say anything he wants, I don't care, as long as he does what I need him to do.
My opinion is not much defferent from his:
Reliabilty of all European cars is much worser than Honda/Toyota. This is great, I can buy nice Jag close to nothing! I had 5 so far (2 x XJS, 2 x X, XK8(still dead))

I personally wouldn't let any repair shop work on any vehicle that they believe is junk and wouldn't pay $100 for..

kinda of gives you a little insight to the care that he's going take with the car..

Then why do you seem to bash the X-Type in so many of your posts? It's expensive to repair, it isn't reliable, etc. It isn't as reliable as a Honda or Toyota, that is probably true, but that doesn't mean it isn't a reliable car.

'makes you wonder..

Here an inexpensive Jag (they're asking $800), Though I am concerned about the inherent unreliability of the marque..

I love Jaguars! they are great looking cars!
I hated Jags when my S-type died 700 miles from my house! I took my dads car, drove back to FL, took my Durango with tow dolly, loaded dads Focus on it and went to MD again to get my S! It turned out, speedometers die all the time and key recognizing device is inside instrument cluster! Dealer ripped me off to program another speedometer.

I wouldn't pay more than $200, most likely AC doesn't work. Are wheels stolen or this is wheelless model?
I told you, Jags were not reliable cars, guy drove it on highway and wheels fell off!

Why didn't you just get the S fixed in MD?

I didn't diagnose it there. In FL:
1.I diagnosed it and was about 95% sure, it was instrument cluster. I went to talk to dealer mechanics, they said speedometers die all the time and showed me cardboard box filled with speedometers.
2.I talked to best mechanic there and guy said he could program used speedometer.
They made me buy key blank for $130(?), because second key was needed.
Everything cost me about $1000, including gas to tow.

From my perspective, i have always said the xtype is the least expensive jaguar to buy and the most expensive to own.

how did they rip you off? Im curious since the security module is in the instrument cluster and when that dies you have to replace the ip and program it. This is most often found out when people want additional keys or they loose theirs.

I had aftermarket key blank, but they refused to use it, making me buy their blank for $130. It was blackmail. My car was dead and I had no choice. It had nothing to do with mechanic, that was service manager woman.
It took 10 min. to reprogram speedometer and keys, they charged me for 1 hour, it is OK, not complaining about that.

we'll program a key not purchased from us but it has to be a Jaguar key. Too many issues with ebay, aftermarket keys and remotes. Yeah its a standard 1 hour fee. time doesn't matter. You know overhead, damn Toughbook laptops that are $6000 and have to be used, we have 6 and many times we're waiting for someone else to finish. I would like to use my own $1100 touch screen laptop and just load software and buy a interface. BUT NOOOOO Jaguar can tell what we use and they wont update and bitch at dealers that try. Most all good locksmiths can do it as well and get around VCM programming or replacement like on the newer cars
