Angry P0402 - EGR flow excessive

Dear folks,

My 2003 X-type jaguar starts with the engine light on 4 weeks ago. I went to the mechanic and he told me that the exhaust system was clogged. He suggest me to use some additive with the gas, however does not work. Yesterday I spoke to him again and he told me that to solve this problem he has to change the whole exhaust system and it will cost U$ 2.500,00. Is that any other alternative such as clean the system manually or change the EGR valves (that could be also the problem)? Please help me...

Fernando

Either you have a typo or a bad mechanic or both. There are not egr's on xtypes. Now a p0420 is a bank 1 catalytic convertor below efficiency. Doesnt meen its plugged, it meens its operating below the epa's mandated threshold for cleaning the exhaust. Thats the bank against the firewall and the hard cat to replace. Are you under 8/80? If so its still under emmissions warranty

Thanks Brutal!
Actually now I am on 80.102 miles, so I think the warranty does not apply anymore. Do you think that to fix this problem it will cost too much? Do you have any recommendation here for south florida? If I leave like that what are the consequences for the engine and car performance?
Thanks once more...
Fernando

You wont be able to state insp with check engine light on.
Do you have a dealer you go to and goo relationship with? I would go and tell them the light has been on for a couple hundred miles and see if they cant work with you, afterall typos happens.....79,973
you might want to stop at the ATM first

Hey Brutal, thanks for the tips. However I don't think I can ask such "favor".... Do you have other suggestion so I can do it on regular basis... Do you have an idea how much will cost to solve this problem... I am from Brazil and I will stay with this car just for a year... afterwards I will sell it... I cant bring the car with me to Brazil... So I would like to stay with the car working good without spending a lot of money...

if you're that close they might still help you as Brutal says. The Jag dealer (at least here in the Detroit) area has been very good about things like that. It never hurts to ask.
