Default P1646 , p1000

Greetings!

Okay, here's my deal. I own a 2002 X-type 3.0 (U.S.), and my engine light came on yesterday. It gave me the codes P1646 & P111. I cleared them.

Today, the light came on again and I got the codes P1646 & P1000.

I am assuming that the P1646 is the biggy. I'm also assuming that this is one of the O2 sensors after searching other forums. However, I can't afford to assume which one of the O2 sensors this could be.

Does anyone have any input? I'd really appreciate hearing others' thoughts on this.

Dale

Default P1646

Right hand bank(bank 1) heated O2 sensor . heater failure,--wire shorted to ground,--open.It also says linear HO2S sensor control chip( pcm failure)Looks like the heater in the O2 sensor has failed via a short/broken wire and COULD have taken out the diode in the pcm. Some hand held scanners read O2 activity at least you could compare with bank 2. I assume it's the up stream one ,have heard the down stream O2 wont trip a mil. they use for comparing readings. You could procure a used one just to test even though you can barely see the up stream one and looks like a job just to TEST. Best option is to find a OBD2 scanner that will test it. Also some models (of cars) don't support all the functions, I have ran tests with my scanner and it will tell you if it is supported, I am reasonable sure X-types ECM's do. Hope this helps at least for a bases. The internet (Google) has a wealth of info on this but not Jag specific.

Thanks billbjork for the start! I located the bank 1 o2 sensor connector and will test the ohms tonight because since reading your reply, I learned that anything above 5 is an open circuit and anything below 1.5 is a short. I hope I discover the problem. I will keep you posted on the progress!

I wish that I could afford a 1960s E-Type. Then I wouldn't have these problems!

Default P1646 Tested Ohms

billbjork,

I tested the O2 heater sensor and it pegs the meter out (above 5 ohms), so I guess my next step is to replace it. This should be fun. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks again,

Dale

THIS IS NOT JAG SPECIFIC BUT VERY IMPORTANT. IT MIGHT BE OLD NEWS TO SOME BUT WORTH REPEATING!!

There are people out there who own frequency counters that sit in shopping centers, gas stations, movie parking lots ect that IF you lock your car with the fod they read it, you walk away they open the car and take anything of value. If you have driving teenagers, wives, girlfreinds tell them to lock the car with a key or at least manually so the frequency can't be read. Even if they don't rob you they could be hidding in the back seat and then it's to late. This is especially true for thoughs of you driving the bigger more expensive cars with teenagers with all the stuff they carry.
I hope the moderator will post this on other forums. If it saves one person it was well worth the time!!

Thanks, Bill
