Default Complete List of All OBD Codes

I got this list from here. I think it's a complete list, but if it's not, please add any codes that you are aware of.

I noticed that there wasn't a list of codes in the FAQs. I think this would be a helpful addition.

There are some small changes per model year, so best is always to check yours. I think on most JTIS cd's you will find the DTC list per model&year.

Yep - agree - Lists like this have to be model AND MY specific. These charts are published in the JTIS by both model and MY. Some codes on a generic list like this won't work for the X-Type, for example. There are two big crossovers for codes and other OBD information on the AJV8s - one at the AJ26/27 and one at the 4.0/4.2.

Additionally, these are only the P1xxx codes. A complete list should include the P0xxx codes. P0xxx codes are generic (industry standard), but P1xxx codes are factory specific and will vary by manufacturer - P1000 is a good example of that. P1000 has different meanings across manufacturers.

If you get in the habit of using JTIS for this info, it is far superior that partial lists as it gives so much additional useful information such as drive cycle instructions, CEL info (red yellow lights), codes displayed or not, limp and restricted information too.

Always, REPEAT, always check the codes against your model year. As an example, here is an excerpt from some notes I saved from a technical guy a few years back:

Basically at 05MY P0121 code for TPS on all model lines changed to P2135. Failure
modes for P2135 are exactly the same as P0121. To add some confusion, on X200 and
X350 at 06MY for all engine lines, this code changed its designation to APP sensor while
X100 and X400 remained P2135 for TPS.
Then to add some more confusion, on X200 and X350, what was previously P0121 then
P2135 for TPS changed back to P0121 at 06MY.
I became aware of problems with this code as dealers were changing the throttle
bodies when they should be changing the APP, to add even more confusion, they were
also changing ECMs as the fault description in GTR states "APP sensor: incorrect start
value (not zero) sub-processor." It is the mention of the sub-processor that made folks
think that the fault is in the sup CPU of the ECM.

So you see, model year is everything, lest you go off on a tangent you don't want to be on!! Could get expensive.

Yep, a couple of others that really screw things up especially for DIYers trying to diagnose simple engine malfunctions:

- Both the AJV6 (Duratec engine, Ford and Jaguar versions) and AJV8 engines have had two major iterations of cylinder numbering. This affects the relative firing numbering order (not actual, just the numbering schema) and the P02xx; P03xx code designator locations, so often, the wrong cylinder is being chased. The charts are correct if used.

- The AJV6 in the X-Type only uses one knock sensor and Jaguar arbitrarily chose the generic bank 2 (p0332/33) code location. This engine doesn't use a P0327/28. All other versions of the AJV6 and AJV8s do.

- No EGRs in the AJV6 and NA AJ26/27s but the charts hold the OBD locator position for optional models. Then in the 4.2, the EGR is present. I've known some who have tried chasing down an EGR failure on a vehicle that doesn't have one.

- The 4.2 uses a MAPS, none on the 4.0, so P110x codes are used. The 4.2 chart wouldn't fit a 4.0.

Can go on and on, but the point is - use the correct circa DTC charts for the car being diagnosed, and things go very smoothly.

Oops... Maybe one of the mods can put a link to Gus' list of codes in the FAQ. Every time I need to look up a code I always have to go to Google, and it just seems weird that we don't have a link to the codes in the FAQs.

P0171

Generic OBD Error Code Details for P0171

System Too Lean

What does this mean?

OBD Code P0171refers to
Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1. Note: This DTC is very similar to P0174, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.
Symptoms

Possible sumptoms of OBD code P0171
You will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration.
Causes

Possible causes of OBD code P0171
A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: •The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry. •There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.
Possible Solutions

Possible solutions include: •In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling •Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary •Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

A late 'welcome' to the forum jcjcrespo as I see you have been with us for over a year before making your first post.

Your profile shows you have an XJS, you are asking for advice on your friend's X300 and you have posted about it in XK8/XKR forum.

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Repeat with a reputable scanner, that looks very suspect.
