my X had a small tick but nothing you could here from inside the car! Did you buy it from a Jaguar dealer? How long ago did you buy it?

if you have select edition, don't remove things from the motor. Let the dealer do it.

Never heard valvetrain noise like that from an X-Type yet. Did you try and turn off the a/c to see if noise goes away?
The injectors can get pretty loud on Xs from time to time. Possibly that you are hearing?

Did the dealer give it a thorough servicing before selling it to you? If not, first thing I would do is give it a fresh oil change, maybe start using synthetic in her from now on. Coudn't hurt.

My 03 X Type did this. You could hear the ticking noise low toward the rear of the engine when it was idling. Turns out the torque convertor flex plate was loose. The dealer fixed it under warranty in a couple of hours. Hope this helps.

ohc engines don't have litters they are more like the old flat head motors and at most use tappets. My x makes all kinds of stupid noises from the drivetrain so good luck. Could be an exhaust leak as well so make sure your manifolds and all that are checked as well. Good luck.

i noticed yesterday i had a tick and then once i got home the car sounded real bad, if i reved it if sounded like something in the exhaust system. did notice i was a little low on oil so i added some,. once it gets up to operating temperature you hear it the most. had a v8 dakota and i had a broken exhaust manifold bolt. sounds like the same but i just put the car up on CL tonight, with no job and what little unemployment i get i cant afford to put any money in it. If any of you are from the ny area and want a car ill sell it to you cheap
