Potential new owner of the X-Type 2009

Greetings!
Since I've just graduated form university and obtained my driving license ( late at 21, I know
), my parents are wanting to purchase for me a car. The condition is that my mother also likes the car as, in a year or two, I'll be leaving the country and she'll be the one taking the car then since hers is almost dead.
After spending, like, weeks checking out various showrooms, we reached agreement on the Jaguar X-Type 2009. Honestly, I think the car looks sexy as hell inside and out.
What I'm concerned about is reliability issues; what I've heard from friends and read online is certainly not encouraging, and I don't want to be spending lots of time and money on repairs and all that. As owners of the X-Type, what would you say to someone who knows nothing about the technicalities of cars?

bend over and dont bother with a fat wallet... a simple platinum credit card will do.
seriously, why be a sitting duck... get out there and learn about the technicalities of cars. 4 wheels, an engine, brakes, transmissions, etc.. have been around for 100 years.. what are you waiting for? an implant to teach you these things?
the car dealers have already learned how to extract cash from the untrained, there is no other defence.
To think that reliability is going to save you is absurd. ALL new cars are reliable, the window is tiny between different cars. But for certain, if you buy an expensive car, and if you are not knowledgeable... you WILL have expensive ownership no matter how good or bad the car is. What on earth are they actually teaching in university these days anyway?
sorry to be hard on a new guy. but you are young.. you can take it..

No need to be sorry. Cars have been around forever.
But they've never actually interested me until recently and, as such, I've never put any effort into researching all those technicalities. That is definitely changing, I assure you, but my main concern was that, considering my current ineptness with cars (that will decrease wit time, experience and research [8D]), is the X-Type a bad, bad idea?

2009? I'd opine that you're in the UK, not USA, as 2008 was the last year for the X-type here.
If you can convince your mother, get the manual, it's more fun.
I've not researched the UK prices (due to me being in the USA), but the X-type here loses a LOT of value in the used market. You might be wiser to look for a recent used one (2006, 2007, or 2008) as you'd probably be spending half the money.
UK has more choices in powerplants as well as offering a front drive only version. I like all-wheel drive, and found it very very neutral in the X-type (i.e. invisible).
Overall, the X-type is very smooth and quiet and quite befitting being a Jag.

What Carlton said..
IMO..the bugs are gone from the 2009s or 2008s or 2007s...get one that suits you and enjoy..never mind the bad rap the earlier models got...it don't apply to the later models.
