Default power steering pump noise

My 2004 X-Type 3.0 56k miles has a strange noise coming from the power steering pump area. It is much worse when you turn the wheel and approach lock. It sounds like it’s about rattle itself right off the car!!! Not at all like any noise I’ve ever heard from a power steering pump. It’s defiantly not like the whine you normally hear with a bad pump. It almost sounds like it’s external to the pump but nothing looks out of place. Oh, COULD THEY HAVE FOUND A LESS EXCCESSABLE PLACE TO PUT IT!!!

I have an 03 2.5 x-type. I recently replaced the H2O pump. I get a strange (rattling?) noise from that area as well. I can't put my finger on where it comes from. I get it when it idles (sometimes) - after the auto is shut off (sometimes) for a few seconds. Quite puzzling. I look forward to reading responses from someone with this experience. Best of luck. I'll post if I get it figured out.

Just had it in to the dealer, Cincinnati Jaguar, they have always treated me well and not ripped me off. I couldn't find the source of the noise so I took the plunge. It turned out to be two bolts holding the engine and torque converter/transmission had backed out and were interfering with other components. The mechanic said he had seen this before but its very rare. Well its fixed anyway.

They also set the global close for me at no charge.

Default Whining whirring noise near Power Steering Reservoir

Car: 2006 x-type 3.0 85K miles

Whining noise from around Power Steering Reservoir. Filled fluid. Already had Transfer Case done at 65K. Just did Prop shaft yesterday at Cincinnati Jaguar. Pitch increases with rpm. Happens in and out of gear. The steering is fine. Smooth and no rattles.

Could it be the steering pump?

Attached is clip of noise.

Default Power Steering Pump Noise

The car just came back from Cincinnati Jaguar. It was leaking tranny fluid. Turns out the recently replaced Transfer Case had a bad seal and started leaking around the right axle. They replaced it (warranty). Now it shifts smooth as silk, BUT the power steering noise is getting worse. Now the steering wheel vibrates. I hope it fails soon because the sound is embarassing. Warranties don't cover noises

No resolution. The noise continues. Either I pay to replace the PS pump out of my pocket or I live with the noise until it fails and warranty covers it. Warranty runs out July 2012. for now just noise no leaks.

So, noise is the same, loud enough to turn heads. Embarrassing. Still not sure where it's coming from. Jag Dealer said "Yeah they do that. I have heard worse." Strange thing is the gas mileage has dropped off significantly. Getting 16 to 17 city since they replaced the prop-shaft. Was getting 19 to 20. Same fuel. Same driving pattern. Planning to take it to a former Jag Tech to see what he thinks. Will post upate.

Default Solved

I couldn't take the noise any longer so I took it up to White Allen Jaguar in Dayton. They listened to it and agreed with me that it was the PS pump. They replaced it under the select edition warranty. No more whine. The MPG issue was the fuel filter. They recommended having it replaced every 40K. Mine had 84K on it. Need to drive it fir a while to see how the mileage improves. It has noticeably quicker throttle response now though.

Noise came back after a week. Final solution was AC compressor.

have the tech use a stethoscope to listen to the A/C Compressor. Simple dowel rod held to the housing should do it. Good Luck!
I traded my X for a 2009 New Beetle Convertible No more money pit and waiting for the next thing to fail.
