Default Prop/drive shaft bearing is whining...so what if I wait to get it replaced

Is there any danger in waiting on this? Happens up to 30 MPH. It is winter out here in Colorado and the car is parked outside in the snow. Car is a 2004 and other than that, running great. I looked at threads on lubing the bearing, looks like my model has no grooves in it to get the oil in the bearing.

Any idea on what a replacement would run on a 2004? I know I can buy the bearing it looks like on Ebay from the UK. Wondering what you guys paid for labor on this.

Replacing the propshaft at the dealer is probably $1000. Yeah, you can wait, nothing urgent. This I more of an annoyance than anything. If y9ou can put up with the noise and wait until it warms up you'll be fine.

I was looking into greasing my when I first got my car. I guess the 2004's don't have the holes to put the grease needle for some reason. I read what you can do is get the thin grease needle and wedge it between the bearing seals and inject some grease in there. I would give it a try. If you invest in a grease gun and needle, you'll be back maybe $30, and it very well could fix your problem. I think if you got grease into it soon you would have better luck saving the bearing than waiting 30,000 miles. I've seen the grease needle tips on ebay and amazon for around $5. If you can get some good grease in there I think you'd be good to go.

Another thing you could do in the meantime is just try spraying it with some white lithium grease with the straw, and see if you can get it greased enough to at least quiet it down and oil it a bit. I heard some people have done this with wd-40 even and supposedly works (on driveshaft bearings of other cars)

I greased mine and the whine quit. I've read that you can still grease a 2004 even without the grooves.

I just replaced my propshaft last week myself after the universal joint at the front broke and was just spinning with the transfer box spindle and not turning the rest of the shaft. Got a second hand propshaft for £50 and fitted it myself in 40 minutes easiest job i've done yet. 6 bolts on the fronts of the shaft 2 in the middle supporting the bearing and 6 bolts at the back not one of them was overly tight to undo just need and allen key and a 13mm socket for the support bolts. I'd never get a garage to do it it is just 2 easy as long as you can jack the car up high enough safely.

Snow stopped and seems the sound has gone away for now. I plan on doing nothing with it as of right now. This is my winter car with snow tires on it.

Hey there carcster, my propshaft bearing has been out for... 3 years... . Nothing bad has happened to me yet though! What I did was buy a laser temp gauge from harbor freight so I can tell how much heat is coming from the bearing and I can monitor it to make sure I don't melt anything.

BTW, I am also from colorado and have had this thing whine every time it gets under like 25 degrees. Tried to grease it, and the whine didn't go away. All the grease did was make it so that it would whine when it was under 22 degrees which in my book means it didn't change anything... Lucky for me, I got a few Jeeps and a subaru I drive in the winter, so I don't have to deal with the whine. Long story short though, don't touch it until you come across a good deal on a second hand propshaft as mentioned above.

The summer would be a good time to get a grease needle and try to put some new high temp grease in there. If it is out of grease, greasing it is going to help it a lot with or without the sound. Driving a bearing without grease is not good. Those prop shafts are probably really expensive too. I'd say better to invest $30 in the grease tools and maybe prolong the life of the those bearings 5 or 10 more years. That reminds me I need to do mine too. I read about it when I got my car, but I never noticed a sound. Hopefully I'll get around to it before next winter.
