Prop shaft
Through what I have read I think I need to replace the prop shaft (the stick thing that goes from the transfer case to the diff) I have a 2002 s type 2.5 53K Km manual tranny.
Symptoms: When the car is cold, I start it and when I start driving drive in first gear as I approach 2000 rmp there is a howal coming from under the car towards the front. Then as I shift to second gear it makes the same noise up till 2000 rpm. When I shift to third it goes away. When the car has been driven and warmed up properly (15 mins of driving) the noise does not happen in any dears or rpm. I assume its a prop shaft (if thats what it is called) anyone know where I can find one at a decent price? I am in Canada. Also I remember a vague conversation about someone finding a carbon fiber prop shaft for our cars and they are supposed to be better and cheaper. Can anyone share any information on this?

Is this your first experience with the whine in "colder" weather? If so, it's likely the prop shaft center bearing making the noise. I'm in Canada as well but my '02X lived in Arizona until a couple years ago so no center bearing noise until the first November here. Dealership was about $1100 to replace. Found prop shafts out of the US for about $300 less but shipping, etc was costly. Do you live nearthe border? Pop down to the states and get it done there?

I've got the same problem as you, the dealer wanted $800 to replace the whole thing. I remember a thread somewhere a while back that suggested getting the needle attachment for a grease gun and trying to grease the bearing. I'm going to give that a shot before this winter to see if it helps. There's really nothing functionally wrong with the bearing at the time being, I think it just gets a little tight in the cold weather. A little extra grease may or may not work but I figure it's worth a shot.
IIRC, Jaguar replaced the original prop shafts with carbon fiber shafts upon failure (customer whining)of the original shafts under warranty. There are some writeups on the Roadfly board for greasing the bearing. Luckily I had mine replaced (x2) under warranty, so I don't know the $$.
Try Rock Auto or similar salvage yard supplier to see if you can find a lightly used one.

Sorry to disappoint but that is incorrect. The new propshaft is steel, like the old version.

Your best bet is to call your dealer and ask. Jaguar seems to change positions on things quite frequently over the years. I can't sit here and tell you what your dealer would do for you, sorry.

If you are looking at one in the box, and judging by your handle, does that mean you are a Jag parts dealer or work at one? Can you help mr.xtype, or any one of us for that matter, with OEM parts needs at less than dealer retail?
I have come to the realization that what I read elsewhere was bullsh*t and I was guilty of buying into it, and redistributing. Lesson learned.
I am still going to get under my X and see what I can find regarding the makeup of the shaft, just for my own curiosity. What about the S type?
